Road 96 is a narrative-driven road trip adventure with procedural storytelling elements. Set in a dystopian country on the brink of revolution, players assume the role of multiple teenage runaways attempting to escape the authoritarian regime of Petria by reaching the border.

Each journey is different, shaped by your decisions, route, interactions, and the characters you meet along the way. The game blends exploration, choice-based dialogue, light puzzle-solving, and minigames into an emotional and politically charged odyssey.

It stands out for its experimental structure—combining procedural generation with handcrafted story moments—to explore themes of freedom, resistance, and identity through a shifting cast of characters.

Plot and Setting

Set in the fictional nation of Petria in the summer of 1996, the game revolves around a series of teenagers who are trying to flee an oppressive government. The country is ruled by the authoritarian President Tyrak, with civil unrest brewing as a pivotal election looms.

You don’t play one single character—instead, you experience a series of road trips as various teens, each with different stories, personalities, and fates. Some will make it. Some won’t. Your choices affect not only their outcomes but the political landscape of Petria itself.

The world is vibrant and stylized, ranging from desert highways and run-down motels to gas stations, forests, and city outskirts.

Gameplay Features

Procedural Storytelling

The journey is different with every playthrough—encounters, events, and routes are randomly assembled from dozens of curated scenes.

Each segment ties back to seven recurring characters with branching arcs, gradually revealing their backgrounds and roles in the national crisis.

Choices That Matter

Your decisions—big and small—affect the fate of characters, the political climate, and the nation’s future.

Cumulative actions across multiple playthroughs determine the final outcome of the election and the resistance movement.

Multiple Playable Teens

You don’t just follow one protagonist. When one teen’s story ends (successfully or not), you pick up with another, gradually influencing the broader narrative arc.

Exploration and Minigames

Engage in activities like hacking, hitchhiking, rhythm games, or arcade shooting.

Travel on foot, by bus, in stolen cars, or with sketchy strangers—each mode of travel carries risks and rewards.

Upgrade System

Skills like lockpicking, hacking, or sweet-talking unlock new dialogue options or routes, carrying over to future characters.

Themes

Freedom and Oppression

A central motif is the struggle for liberty in a tightly controlled society. Your characters are always on the edge of capture, violence, or betrayal.

Youth and Rebellion

The protagonists are all teenagers, navigating the dangers of adulthood and politics under pressure.

Political Agency and Consequence

The game explores how small actions can ripple through history—voting, protesting, and even conversation choices impact the course of a nation.

Human Connection

Beneath the politics is a deeply human story about empathy, kindness, risk, and survival.

Visuals and Audio

Road 96 employs a vibrant, cel-shaded art style with exaggerated character designs and atmospheric, diverse environments. Its aesthetic blends retro Americana with surreal political imagery.

The soundtrack is a highlight, featuring synth-heavy tracks and indie anthems that reflect the emotional tone of each journey. Artists include The Toxic Avenger, Cocoon, and Daniel Gadd, among others. The music not only sets the mood but also plays a thematic role in several key scenes.

Have you played Road 96? What’s your favourite part of it? We’d love to hear from you.

Other things you might want to know:

How long does Road 96 take to beat?

Road 96 takes around 8 hours to complete.

Is Road 96 worth buying?

Upon release, Road 96 was praised for its innovation, strong writing, and emotional storytelling. Critics lauded its balance of political commentary and human drama, though some noted occasional tonal inconsistencies due to its procedural format.

Universe Sandbox is a physics-based space simulator that lets you manipulate the cosmos on a massive scale. Seamlessly combining scientifically grounded simulations with sandbox-style interactivity, the game allows you to create, destroy, or modify entire solar systems and galaxies using real astrophysical laws.

It’s not a traditional game with objectives or narratives—instead, Universe Sandbox is a tool for experimentation, exploration, and awe. You can watch planets collide, spin up black holes, simulate climate change on Earth, or just fling moons into the Sun to see what happens.

It’s often used by educators, astronomers, and science enthusiasts for its surprisingly accurate simulation of gravitational dynamics, planetary motion, and stellar evolution.

Core Simulation Features

Gravity and Orbital Mechanics

Real-time Newtonian physics simulates gravity and inertia across thousands of celestial bodies.

Watch how orbits shift over time, planets get captured or ejected, or moons form from debris.

Scale and Speed Control

Zoom from planetary surfaces to galactic scale instantly.

Pause, slow down, or accelerate time by factors of millions to observe fast or slow cosmic events.

Destruction and Creation

Smash planets together and witness thermodynamic effects like surface heating, vaporization, and crater formation.

Spawn stars, asteroids, or even rogue black holes with a click.

Climate and Atmosphere Simulation

Tweak Earth’s atmosphere to simulate global warming, nuclear winter, or terraforming.

See the effects of axial tilt, greenhouse gases, and orbital changes on planetary habitability.

Stellar Evolution

Stars age, expand, and die based on realistic life cycles—watch a massive blue giant collapse into a neutron star or go supernova.

White dwarfs, binary systems, and even hypothetical exotic stars can be modelled.

Interactive Tools

Use lasers to heat up planets, “terraform” surfaces, or adjust their rotational spin.

View orbits, velocities, masses, and other astrophysical data in real-time overlays.

Themes

Cosmic Scale and Perspective

It conveys a profound sense of scale—how small we are in the grand scheme, and how fragile planets can be.

Creation and Destruction

Offers a sandbox of ultimate power—users can simulate the birth of life or the annihilation of entire star systems.

Science and Education

Explains complex astronomical phenomena visually, making it ideal for classrooms and armchair astrophysicists.

Speculation and Hypothesis

Encourages scientific curiosity by letting users explore the consequences of hypothetical changes—what happens if Jupiter becomes a star? What if Earth had Saturn’s rings?

Visuals and Audio

While not graphically intense in a traditional sense, Universe Sandbox uses clean, data-rich visuals to illustrate orbits, heat maps, atmospheres, and stellar processes. Explosions and impacts are colourful, and planetary surfaces deform under stress.

The soundtrack and ambient sound design are minimalist but atmospheric, emphasising calm, awe, and contemplation over action.

Have you played Universe Sandbox? What’s your favourite part of it? We’d love to hear from you.

Other things you might want to know:

Can you get Universe Sandbox for free?

Universe Sandbox is not free. It is currently £16 on Steam.

Is Universe Sandbox worth it?

Universe Sandbox has been widely praised for its accessibility, scientific merit, and replayability. It’s seen use in educational institutions and gained a strong user base among science communicators and YouTubers.

Kenshi is a brutal, open-ended sandbox RPG set in a sprawling post-apocalyptic sci-fi world. With no set story, no chosen one, and no guiding hand, Kenshi gives players total freedom to live out a story of survival, struggle, and self-determination. You start as a nobody—starving, weak, and alone—and can evolve into anything from a wandering trader to a warlord commanding armies.

Its hallmark is player agency: everything is emergent, unforgiving, and systemic. Think Dwarf Fortress meets Mount & Blade with a sci-fi twist. There’s no level-scaling, and the world doesn’t wait for you to catch up.

Plot and Setting

Set in a desolate, ruined world where ancient technologies and broken civilisations lie buried under sand and ash, Kenshi drops you into a dystopia filled with warring factions, cannibals, slavers, and mysterious ancient machines.

There’s no single narrative, but lore is scattered across ruins, dialogues, and books. The setting hints at a fallen world of once-great empires, AI-driven cataclysms, and biotechnological experiments gone wrong. You can choose to uncover these stories or ignore them completely in favour of carving your own legend.

The world is harsh, with hunger, injury, and capture constantly threatening you. Weather systems, faction politics, and wildlife all interact in a dynamic, unscripted environment.

Gameplay Features

Total Freedom

No quests or mandatory objectives. Become a mercenary, thief, farmer, rebel, slaver, monk, or nomad—or all of them at once.

You can play solo or recruit dozens of characters to form a group, town, or private army.

Squad-Based Tactical RPG

Control multiple characters at once, issuing commands in real time.

Use pause and speed-up functions to manage large squads or react to ambushes and battles.

Detailed Character Progression

Stats improve through use—no classes or XP. You get better at what you do by doing it: running builds athletics, mining builds strength, getting beat up builds toughness.

Permanent injuries (like losing limbs) lead to cybernetic replacements or adaptations.

Base Building and Economy

Build your own outposts or fortified towns, complete with crafting stations, defences, farms, and research labs.

Manage supply lines, defend against raids, and create self-sufficient economies.

Factions and World Simulation

The world doesn’t revolve around the player—factions war, migrate, and react dynamically.

Kill a faction leader, and power structures shift. Make enemies or allies depending on your reputation and past actions.

Themes

Post-Apocalyptic Sci-Fi

Ruined tech, failed utopias, and buried AI secrets form the world’s forgotten backbone.

Anarchic Survivalism

There are no governments or heroes—only factions, tribes, and whoever has the power to take and hold land.

Persistence Through Pain

Kenshi rewards suffering and adaptation. Broken bones and lost limbs are part of the journey.

Player-Created Narrative

The best stories in Kenshi are the ones you create, forged from hard-earned victories and tragic losses.

Visuals and Audio

Kenshi is graphically modest but visually distinctive. The barren landscapes, jagged ruins, and spartan UI emphasise the game’s harsh tone. Each biome—from radioactive plateaus to fungal swamps—carries its own dangers and visual personality.

The ambient soundtrack is minimal and atmospheric, reinforcing a sense of isolation and resilience. Sound design favours utility over spectacle, immersing you in a world where tension and quiet survival matter more than bombast.

Have you played Kenshi? What’s your favourite part of it? We’d love to hear from you.

Other things you might want to know:

How long is a game of Kenshi?

Kenshi is at most 10 hours long.

Is Kenshi open world?

Kenshi is an open world with real-time strategy elements.

Haven is a sci-fi action RPG that focuses on love, intimacy, and survival. It tells the story of two lovers, Yu and Kay, who escape to a forgotten planet to avoid being separated by a totalitarian regime. The game combines exploration, light survival mechanics, and turn-based combat, all underpinned by a narrative centred on partnership, rebellion, and freedom. Unlike most sci-fi games that focus on war or isolation, Haven is a romantic and emotional experience that foregrounds connection.

Plot and Setting

Set on a fragmented, alien world called Source, Haven follows Yu and Kay, a couple who have fled their society’s oppressive matchmaking system, known as the Matchmaker. The two find refuge on Source, a deserted planet scarred by toxic corruption and floating landmasses.

Their journey is one of love, survival, and reconnection—not just with each other, but with a world full of unknowns. They repair their ship, scavenge for food, and clean up the planet while deepening their bond and uncovering the truth about Source’s past and the system they fled.

The game’s sci-fi setting is vibrant and ethereal—colourful skies, surreal terrain, and abstract environmental design support its mood of romantic rebellion and discovery.

Gameplay Features

Duo-Based Exploration

Glide across floating islands in tandem, using “Flow” energy to traverse, purify corrupted areas, and uncover resources.

The couple moves as one, emphasising their unity in both movement and design.

Turn-Based Combat with a Twist

Combat uses a real-time-with-pause system where Yu and Kay’s actions (melee, ranged, shields, and pacify) must be synchronised.

Coordination and timing matter more than brute force—combat feels intimate and cooperative.

Relationship-Driven Progression

Rest at your ship, cook meals, heal, and engage in heartfelt (and often humorous) dialogue between the pair.

Relationship growth unlocks combat synergies, new abilities, and personal story beats.

Resource Management and Crafting

Gather ingredients to cook meals, craft meds, and maintain your ship. Light survival mechanics are present, but not punishing—designed to encourage planning rather than grinding.

Themes

Love as Central Mechanic

Most RPGs make love a subplot; Haven makes it the main mechanic—your bond affects everything from combat to cooking.

Escapism vs. Responsibility

The game explores what it means to run away and what it means to build a life together. It challenges whether love alone can sustain freedom.

Nonviolence and Empathy

Where many games solve problems with conflict, Haven leans toward empathy, healing, and emotional growth.

Visuals and Audio

Haven features a soft, pastel colour palette with cel-shaded visuals that support its tone of romantic escapism. The floating islands feel dreamlike and abstract, yet grounded enough to explore and call home.

The electro-pop soundtrack by Danger is a highlight—energetic during exploration and combat, but ambient and moody in quiet moments. Voice acting is strong and naturalistic, enhancing the chemistry between the leads.

Stray is a third-person, narrative-driven adventure game where you play as a stray cat in a decaying cyberpunk city inhabited by sentient robots. Blending platforming, light puzzle-solving, and atmospheric exploration, the game delivers a unique feline perspective on a dystopian world. While lacking traditional combat, Stray captivates players through its emotional story, environmental storytelling, and richly detailed world.

Plot and Setting

Set in a post-apocalyptic underground city sealed off from the surface, Stray begins when the protagonist—a domestic cat separated from its feline companions—falls into the subterranean slums of a robot-run metropolis. As the cat searches for a way back to the surface, it teams up with a small flying drone named B-12, who helps translate the robot inhabitants’ speech and interfaces with the decaying infrastructure.

The city is a mixture of neon-lit alleys, rusted industrial zones, overgrown remnants of humanity, and robotic societies trying to emulate human culture. The journey reveals the mysterious fate of humans, the rise of artificial life, and the resilience of memory.

Gameplay Features

Cat-Centric Movement and Exploration

Navigate tight spaces, leap across rooftops, climb pipes, and push objects—mechanics built around feline agility.

Movement is fluid but guided: jumps are context-sensitive, lending a graceful and deliberate feel to traversal.

Puzzle-Solving and Stealth

Use B-12 to interact with terminals, unlock doors, or distract hostile machines.

Stealth sequences require avoiding hostile entities, such as Zurks (bio-organic parasites) and security drones, by utilising speed, cover, and timing.

Environmental puzzles emphasise observation, object manipulation, and creative pathfinding.

Minimalist UI and Immersive Design

The game omits intrusive HUD elements to maintain immersion.

Environmental cues and subtle camera movements guide the progression, with storytelling seamlessly embedded within the world.

Enemy Variety and Encounters

While mostly nonviolent, Stray features sections where evasion and puzzle-solving take precedence over combat.

Zurks swarm the cat in chase sequences, while later areas introduce Sentinels, drone-like enforcers requiring stealth tactics.

The tension comes not from firepower but vulnerability—you’re small, fragile, and must outthink threats.

Narrative and Themes

Memory, Identity, and Artificial Life

B-12’s arc revolves around recovering lost memories and reconciling its past as a human consciousness uploaded into a drone.

The robotic citizens—remnants of humanity’s legacy—emulate human customs, seeking meaning in a world without their creators.

The game raises quiet, melancholic questions about selfhood, loneliness, and the bonds between species.

Environmental Collapse and Hope

Nature reclaims forgotten places while artificial life carries on, symbolising both decay and renewal.

The ultimate goal—reaching the surface—is both literal and metaphorical: a journey toward freedom and light.

Visuals and Audio

Stray features stunning art direction with richly layered urban environments, dynamic lighting, and dense environmental detail. The city feels alive, even in decay, with graffiti, neon signs, overgrown plants, and expressive robot animations.

The soundtrack is a standout: a mix of ambient synth, melancholic piano, and electronic textures. Each zone has a distinct soundscape that reinforces its emotional tone, from the desolate slums to the quiet reverence of the abandoned upper city.

Stray takes around 5 hours to complete.

Atomic Heart is a single-player sci-fi action RPG that blends fast-paced first-person combat with surreal world-building, puzzles, and immersive sim mechanics. Set in an alternate-history Soviet Union, the game features a retrofuturistic aesthetic, bizarre mutant enemies, and a wide arsenal of melee and ranged weapons—all wrapped in an eerie, bio-technological nightmare. It’s often described as a blend of BioShock, DOOM, and Prey, with its own distinct surrealist flair.

Plot and Setting

The game takes place in a warped version of the USSR in 1955, where the Soviet Union has achieved massive technological advancements, including sentient robots, AI, and biological experimentation—all controlled via a centralised neural network known as Kollektiv.

You play as Major Sergei Nechaev, a mentally unstable KGB special agent (codename: P-3) sent to investigate Facility 3826, a secret Soviet research complex that has descended into chaos after its robotic workforce suddenly rebelled. What begins as a standard recovery mission quickly turns into a descent into a hallucinatory dystopia, filled with rogue AI, grotesque mutants, and philosophical horrors.

Crossout is a free-to-play, online vehicular combat MMO set in a post-apocalyptic world where players build their own heavily armed vehicles from scratch and battle in fast-paced multiplayer arenas. The game emphasises deep vehicle customisation, tactical combat, and player creativity, blending the feel of Mad Max-style chaos with a modular engineering sandbox.

Plot and Setting

The world of Crossout is set in the aftermath of a mysterious global catastrophe that has left society fractured and the Earth scarred. Civilisations have collapsed, and survivors now roam the wastelands in makeshift vehicles—half-tanks, half-hotrods—competing for resources, survival, and dominance.

Factions have emerged from the ashes, each with its own aesthetic, technologies, and ideologies. Players can align with these factions to gain access to specific vehicle parts and perks. Though not driven by a conventional story, Crossout’s lore unfolds through seasonal events, faction wars, and world-building details in the vehicle components and locations.

DayZ is a multiplayer open-world survival game set in a grim post-apocalyptic world where players must fight to survive not just against the infected, but against hunger, illness, weather, injuries, and—most dangerously—other players. Originally a mod for ARMA 2, DayZ became a standalone title and helped define the survival genre that followed. There are no objectives, no story—just your will to survive and whatever you can scavenge along the way.

Plot and Setting

Set in the fictional post-Soviet country of Chernarus, a deadly virus has wiped out much of the population and turned the infected into aggressive, zombie-like creatures. As one of the few survivors, you awaken on the coast with nothing but the clothes on your back. The game doesn’t give you goals—your story is emergent, shaped by the choices you make and the people you meet (or avoid) along the way.

The world is large and harsh, featuring dense forests, abandoned towns, crumbling military bases, and miles of treacherous countryside. It’s a sandbox environment where weather, geography, and resource scarcity play huge roles in how your experience unfolds.

Gameplay Features

Persistent Online Survival

Your character persists across server sessions, keeping the items you scavenge and the injuries you suffer.

Survival mechanics include hunger, thirst, temperature, blood loss, sickness, and fatigue.

Dynamic Interactions with Other Players

Full PvP interaction—players can team up, trade, betray, or kill each other.

Voice chat and gestures allow for communication, deception, or negotiation.

Loot-Based Progression

Search abandoned towns and military installations for weapons, food, medicine, and tools.

Gear includes firearms, melee weapons, protective clothing, and crafting materials.

Health and Medical System

A realistic system where players can suffer from bleeding, infection, broken bones, and diseases.

Bandages, antibiotics, splints, and blood transfusions are essential for long-term survival.

Vehicles and Base Building

Fix and drive vehicles like cars and helicopters (with sufficient parts and fuel).

Players can create hidden stashes, set traps, or even establish rudimentary bases.

Themes

Survival at All Costs

With no respawns or hand-holding, DayZ is about making smart choices under pressure. The harsh environment forces players to constantly weigh the risk and reward.

Human Behaviour Under Duress

One of DayZ’s core themes is trust. The game creates emergent stories where interactions with others, good or bad, become unforgettable.

Emergent Storytelling

Every playthrough is unique, driven by real players and unpredictable encounters. Alliances, ambushes, rescues, and betrayals are all part of the experience.

Visuals and Audio

DayZ uses a realistic visual style powered by the Enfusion engine. Environments are bleak and atmospheric, with overgrown vegetation, deteriorated buildings, and unpredictable weather patterns. The audio plays a critical role in survival—gunshots echo across hills, footsteps alert you to nearby players, and the distant groans of the infected create constant tension. There’s no background music, only the sound of your breath and the unforgiving world around you.

Have you played DayZ? What’s your favourite part of it? We’d love to hear from you.

Other things you might want to know:

What is the point of playing DayZ?

How long does DayZ take to complete?

Around 30 to 50 hours.

Is DayZ a good game?

DayZ received mixed reviews at launch due to early performance issues and a long development cycle, but it earned a loyal following for its tense, unscripted gameplay and player-driven narratives. Over the years, the game has seen significant updates improving stability, content, and mechanics

Shadow Empire is a uniquely ambitious strategy game that fuses 4X empire-building, hex-based wargaming, and role-playing elements into a deeply immersive post-apocalyptic sci-fi experience. Players assume the role of the supreme leader of a fledgling nation on a procedurally generated planet, striving to rebuild civilisation after the collapse of a galactic republic. The game is renowned for its intricate systems, emergent storytelling, and the depth of its simulation.

Plot and Setting

Set in a universe where a once-mighty galactic republic has fallen, Shadow Empire places players on a planet that has regressed into a dark age. Each game begins with the procedural generation of a planet, which can range from arid deserts to oceanic worlds, each with its own climate, biosphere, and resources. Players must navigate the challenges of this world, from hostile environments and alien fauna to remnants of ancient technologies and rival factions.

Black Mesa is a ground-up remake of the original Half-Life (1998), developed by a passionate team of fans who have turned professional. Using the Source engine, it reimagines Valve’s seminal sci-fi FPS with modern visuals, updated gameplay mechanics, and a refined narrative presentation. What began as a mod eventually earned Valve’s blessing and became a full commercial release, offering both nostalgia and freshness for longtime fans and newcomers alike.

Plot and Setting

Set in the high-tech but secretive Black Mesa Research Facility in New Mexico, players assume the role of Dr. Gordon Freeman, a theoretical physicist who finds himself at the heart of a catastrophe after an experiment with alien materials causes a resonance cascade. This dimensional rift invites hostile creatures from the alien world of Xen into our own.

As Freeman, you must navigate the collapsing facility, survive alien attacks, and fend off government forces sent to contain the incident, including you. The journey eventually takes you off-world to Xen itself, now vastly expanded and redesigned in Black Mesa to be more cohesive, atmospheric, and narratively meaningful.

Visuals and Audio

Black Mesa modernises Half-Life’s environments with realistic lighting, high-res textures, and Source engine polish. Laboratories, ventilation shafts, alien caverns, and military outposts all feel more alive and believable. The sound design is equally overhauled, featuring a moody, synth-heavy score and atmospheric soundscapes that ramp up tension and immersion. Gunfire, alien screams, and ambient machinery are weighty and satisfying.
