Subnautica Below Zero: Explore More Ocean Depths With An Icy Twist

Subnautica: Below Zero is a standalone expansion and sequel to Subnautica, set on the same alien planet of 4546B, but in an arctic region. Players explore an icy ocean filled with new biomes, creatures, and mysteries, while facing new challenges such as extreme cold and a more intricate storyline.

Plot and Setting

The game takes place after the events of the original Subnautica. Players control Robin Ayou, a scientist searching for answers regarding her sister’s mysterious death on 4546B. The setting shifts to the frozen waters and snowy landscapes of the planet’s arctic region, offering a new set of challenges in survival and exploration.

Gameplay Mechanics

  • Cold Survival: In addition to managing hunger, thirst, and oxygen, players must also contend with freezing temperatures, requiring them to find heat sources or craft cold-weather gear.
  • New Biomes and Creatures: The arctic environment introduces new creatures, from friendly penguin-like Pengwings to dangerous predators like the Snowstalker. Biomes such as the Twisty Bridges, Lily Pad Islands, and Crystal Caves offer new areas to explore.
  • Improved Storytelling: Unlike the first game, Below Zero places a greater emphasis on a structured narrative, with voice-acted characters, cutscenes, and a more involved plot surrounding the Precursors and the cure for the alien disease.

Visuals and Audio

The game retains the beautiful underwater visuals of the original but adds a fresh aesthetic with frozen environments and icy waters. The atmosphere is both beautiful and foreboding, amplified by a rich audio design that captures the sounds of the deep ocean and the howling arctic winds.

Reception and Impact

Subnautica: Below Zero received positive reviews for expanding on the core mechanics of the original Subnautica, with praise for its storytelling and new survival challenges. While smaller in scale than the original, it was appreciated for adding more narrative depth and a new environment to explore.
