Survival horror gaming has always been a genre that demands a unique blend of tension, strategy, and storytelling. Few franchises have epitomized this genre quite like Resident Evil, and among its many installments, “Resident Evil Zero” stands out as a captivating entry. Released in 2002 for the Nintendo GameCube and later for various platforms, this game offers a prequel experience to the iconic Resident Evil series, shedding light on events that set the stage for the franchise’s enduring narrative. In this blog post, we’ll examine the frightening world of “Resident Evil Zero,” exploring its gameplay mechanics, narrative intricacies, and lasting impact on the survival horror genre.

A Sinister Prelude: Gameplay Mechanics

“Resident Evil Zero” opens a new chapter in the franchise by introducing the “partner zapping” system. Unlike its predecessors, where players are often alone in their struggles against hordes of undead creatures, this game features two protagonists: Rebecca Chambers, a member of the Special Tactics and Rescue Service (STARS), and Billy Coen, an ex-Marine on the run. Players have the freedom to switch between characters, a mechanism that has both strategic and puzzle-solving implications.

Each character has unique strengths and weaknesses. Rebecca excels in mixing herbs and handling chemicals, while Billy is more physically capable, possessing greater strength and endurance. This duality adds an interesting layer to the gameplay, as players must decide which character to control in different situations, leveraging their individual attributes to survive the horrors that await them.

The inventory system in “Resident Evil Zero” is equally noteworthy. Unlike conventional inventories, where items are dropped and retrieved at will, this game employs a system where items are physically dropped in the game world and must be revisited when needed. This forces players to make thoughtful decisions about resource management, as well as to consider backtracking and planning for upcoming challenges.

A Descent into Darkness: Narrative and Storytelling

The action begins before the events of the original Resident Evil, offering a glimpse into the incidents that set the stage for the larger franchise. The story begins with a series of gruesome murders on the Ecliptic Express, a mysterious train stranded in the Arklay Mountains. As Rebecca and Billy investigate, they uncover the Umbrella Corporation’s sinister experiments involving the T-virus, the catalyst for the zombie outbreak that haunts the series.

Throughout the game, players unravel the mysteries behind the creation of the T-virus and its horrific consequences. The eerie atmosphere, combined with haunting visuals and chilling audio design, creates a sense of dread that permeates the entire experience. This narrative approach not only deepens the lore of the franchise but also provides players with a compelling storyline that complements the game’s survival horror elements.

Technical Achievements and Legacy

“Resident Evil Zero” showcases technical achievements that were remarkable for its time. The pre-rendered backgrounds and character models are visually impressive, and the haunting game environments envelop players in an immersive atmosphere. The attention to detail in the architecture and the eerie ambience contribute to the overall sense of unease, which embodies the Resident Evil series theme.

The “partner swapping” system, which allowed players to switch between two protagonists, was a significant innovation. While it received mixed reactions from players, it paved the way for future Resident Evil games to experiment with cooperative gameplay mechanics, influencing titles like “Resident Evil 5” and “Resident Evil 6.”

Other Things You Might Want to Know:

– Critical Reception and Re-releases: “Resident Evil Zero” received generally positive reviews upon its initial release. Critics praised its atmosphere, graphics, and overall gameplay design. They have since released the game on various platforms, allowing new generations of players to experience its horror firsthand.

– Puzzles and Challenges: Like its predecessors, “Resident Evil Zero” features puzzles that players must solve to progress. These puzzles range from simple item combinations to intricate logic challenges, adding a layer of engagement to the gameplay.

– A Glimpse into Character Development: The game provides insight into the characters’ backgrounds and motivations, particularly for Rebecca Chambers. Her growth from a rookie member of STARS to a capable survivor is depicted through both gameplay and narrative elements.

Conclusion: Unearthing the Roots of Fear

“Resident Evil Zero” serves as a compelling addition to the survival horror genre, expanding the lore of the Resident Evil universe while offering players an immersive and spine-chilling experience. Through its innovative partner system, strategic gameplay mechanics, and intricate narrative, the game has secured its place in the annals of gaming history.

As fans of the franchise continue to revisit the sinister landscapes of “Resident Evil Zero,” they can reflect on its impact on subsequent titles in the series and the survival horror genre. Its legacy lives on through its contributions to cooperative gameplay dynamics, intricate storytelling, and the enduring popularity of the Resident Evil franchise.

Other Things You Might Want to Know:

How does “Resident Evil Zero” compare to other games in the franchise in terms of gameplay mechanics and atmosphere?

“Resident Evil Zero” stands out within the franchise due to its unique gameplay mechanics and atmospheric presentation. While adhering to the core survival horror elements that define the Resident Evil series, the game introduces the “partner swap” system, allowing players to switch between two protagonists, Rebecca Chambers and Billy Coen. This mechanic adds a layer of strategic complexity to gameplay, requiring players to consider each character’s strengths and weaknesses to overcome challenges. This dynamic contrasts with other titles in the series where players typically navigate the horror alone.

Atmosphere is another hallmark of the Resident Evil series, and “Resident Evil Zero” continues this tradition by delivering a chilling environment. The pre-rendered backgrounds, haunting visuals, and carefully crafted audio design create a sense of dread that permeates every corner of the game. The Arklay Mountains, the Ecliptic Express, and other locations are meticulously designed to evoke fear and tension, making the game a masterclass in creating a foreboding atmosphere.

What challenges did the developers face in creating a prequel that remained consistent with the established lore of the Resident Evil series?

Developing a prequel within an established franchise poses a unique set of challenges, and the creators of “Resident Evil Zero” were no exception. One challenge ensured that the game’s events aligned seamlessly with the established lore of the Resident Evil universe. The game needed to provide a coherent backstory that explained the origins of the T-virus outbreak while maintaining consistency with the events depicted in the original Resident Evil.

The narrative team had to weave the new storyline into the existing tapestry of the series, filling in gaps without introducing contradictions. They had to consider the implications of every plot point to ensure that the prequel didn’t disrupt the continuity of the broader narrative. Additionally, character development had to remain consistent with the personalities and growth of characters as established in later games.

Overall, striking a balance between delivering a fresh, engaging prequel story while adhering to the established canon required careful planning and meticulous attention to detail.

In what ways did the technical achievements of “Resident Evil Zero” influence the design and development of later survival horror games?

“Resident Evil Zero” achieved technical feats that were notable for its time, and these accomplishments have left a lasting impact on the survival horror genre. The pre-rendered backgrounds and detailed character models set a visual standard for the series, showcasing the potential for creating immersive environments that enhance the horror experience. This approach influenced subsequent Resident Evil titles and other survival horror games, demonstrating the effectiveness of combining detailed visuals with eerie ambiance to immerse players in the game’s world.

The “partner zapping” system, while initially divisive among players, served as an experiment in cooperative gameplay mechanics within a single-player survival horror framework. This made way for titles like “Resident Evil 5” and “Resident Evil 6,” which expanded on cooperative gameplay elements and introduced new ways for players to experience survival horror together.

The attention to environmental design and atmospheric presentation in “Resident Evil Zero” highlighted the importance of setting the best tone in survival horror games. Subsequent titles in the genre took cues from the games approach to creating tension through visuals, audio, and level design.

The technical achievements of “Resident Evil Zero” helped shape the evolution of survival horror games, influencing how developers approach both the visual and gameplay aspects of the genre.

Introduction

In the vast universe of survival horror gaming, the Resident Evil franchise stands tall as one pioneer and a most successful series. Over the years, it has brought us many spine-tingling experiences that kept us glued to our screens, with iconic titles like Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 4, and more. However, amid the more well-known titles, there’s a hidden gem that often gets overlooked: Resident Evil Survivor. Released in 2000 for the PlayStation, this game offers a unique perspective and gameplay style that’s worth revisiting.

A Departure from Tradition

While the mainline Resident Evil games are primarily known for their third-person perspective and cinematic storytelling, Resident Evil Survivor dared to take a different path. Departing from the franchise’s norm, it adopted a first-person perspective, placing players directly in the shoes of an amnesiac protagonist, navigating their way through the nightmarish landscapes of the series.

The game introduced a fresh take on the traditional survival horror experience. Although some fans were skeptical at first, many found the shift in perspective to be surprisingly immersive. The first-person viewpoint brought players closer to the terrifying environments and nightmarish creatures, amplifying the sense of fear and urgency.

Surviving the Nightmare

Resident Evil Survivor follows the story of Ark Thompson, a man suffering from amnesia, as he awakens in the middle of a zombie-infested outbreak on Sheena Island. Players must help Ark uncover the mysteries surrounding his identity while battling hordes of infected creatures and solving intricate puzzles along the way. The game’s narrative weaves through the established Resident Evil lore, creating a sense of familiarity for fans of the franchise.

Gameplay

The gameplay in Resident Evil Survivor blends the classic survival horror elements with the new first-person perspective. As players progress through various environments like abandoned buildings, secret laboratories, and underground passages, they must gather limited resources, solve puzzles, and engage in intense combat with an array of monstrosities.

The first-person perspective added a layer of vulnerability and intensity to the experience. Encounters with enemies were more visceral, and ammunition conservation became a paramount concern. The limited field of view heightened the tension, making each turn of a corner a potential leap-inducing moment. This departure from the usual over-the-shoulder view challenged players to adapt and rethink their strategies.

Puzzles were also a significant part of the gameplay, as is typical in the Resident Evil series. These brain-teasers often required players to scour their surroundings for clues, combining items, and deciphering cryptic messages to progress. The puzzles provided a welcome break from the nerve-wracking encounters, adding a layer of mental stimulation to the mix.

A Controversial Reception

Resident Evil Survivor’s unique gameplay and departure from the franchise’s norms led to a mixed reception upon its release. While some players appreciated the change in perspective and the game’s attempt to experiment with new ideas, others criticized its graphics, controls, and overall execution. Some felt that the first-person viewpoint limited the sense of control and made the gameplay feel clunky, especially given the technology limitations of the time.

Resident Evil Survivor came out during a period of experimentation in the survival horror genre. Developers were trying to find new ways to keep the genre fresh and engaging, leading to both successes and failures. With Survivor, its unique approach might not have resonated with everyone, but it certainly contributed to the broader conversation about the direction of survival horror games.

Legacy and Influence

Despite its mixed reception, Resident Evil Survivor left a mark on the franchise and survival horror gaming as a whole. It showed that the Resident Evil formula could be adapted into different gameplay styles while retaining its core elements of horror, exploration, and puzzle-solving. This experiment paved the way for future spin-offs and offshoots that continued to explore new perspectives and gameplay mechanics within the Resident Evil universe.

The game’s influence is seen in later titles, such as the “Resident Evil: Chronicles” series, which also embraced the first-person perspective. Additionally, the game’s narrative ties to the mainline Resident Evil story added depth to the lore, though it also works as a standalone.

Rediscovering the Gem

If you’re a die-hard Resident Evil fan or a survival horror enthusiast looking for a unique experience, Resident Evil Survivor is absolutely worth revisiting. With the advancements in gaming technology, you can now experience the game with enhanced visuals and controls that ease some concerns players had back in its initial release.

Approach Resident Evil Survivor with an open mind, appreciating it as a product of its time and a daring experiment within the franchise. Embrace the first-person perspective, immerse yourself in the eerie atmosphere of Sheena Island, and uncover the mysteries that await Ark Thompson.

Resident Evil Survivor may not have gained the same level of acclaim as some of its counterparts in the franchise, but it remains an intriguing and important chapter in the history of survival horror gaming. Its departure from tradition, unique first-person perspective, and challenging gameplay offered a fresh take on the Resident Evil formula. As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, it’s worth looking back at titles like Survivor that dared to experiment and push the boundaries of what survival horror can be. So, equip yourself with courage and ammunition, and step into the unsettling world of Resident Evil Survivor!

Other Things You Might Want to Know:

Is Resident Evil Survivor considered a mainline entry in the series?

No, we do not consider Resident Evil Survivor a mainline entry in the Resident Evil series. It’s often categorized as a spin-off due to its departure from the traditional gameplay style and its experimental first-person perspective. While it features connections to the broader Resident Evil lore, it doesn’t play a pivotal role in advancing the main storyline.

How does the gameplay of Resident Evil Survivor differ from other Resident Evil games?

Resident Evil Survivor stands out for its first-person perspective, a departure from the third-person view commonly associated with the franchise. This shift in perspective adds a heightened sense of immersion, making encounters with enemies and exploration more intense. The game focuses on survival horror elements such as limited resources, puzzles, and tense combat, similar to other Resident Evil titles, while offering a unique take on the gameplay mechanics.

Were there any improvements made to the game when it was re-released on modern platforms?

Yes, when Resident Evil Survivor was re-released on modern platforms, certain improvements were made to enhance the overall experience. These improvements include updated graphics and controls, addressing some concerns that players had with the original release. The re-release allows players to experience the game with a smoother visual presentation and more intuitive controls, making it more accessible to a modern audience.

There have been plenty of horror games released for consoles and PC year after year since decades ago with various degrees of success. In 1989, Capcom developed and released for NES the horror role-playing game Sweet Home, which eventually inspired and carved the path to one of the world’s best game series ever Resident Evil. Capcom described it as a survival horror; no one else at that time had used the term to describe any game before. Over the course of 27 years, starting with the release of the original Resident Evil in 1996, the series remains a dominating force in the genre. Here is a closer look at the Resident Evil Games in Order!

Capcom has added quite a number of titles to the series since then; as of 2023, there are 12 games in the series’ core storyline including RE 0 – RE 7, Village, Code Veronica, and two Revelations. If you count each remake as a different release and all the spinoffs, you get around 30 RE games excluding the pachinko, mobile, light gun, and Wii shooter versions. Just in case you want to play chronologically—instead of using the release dates as your guidelines—here is a list of all major Resident Evil games in order.

Resident Evil Zero

The story begins with the aptly titled Resident Evil Zero, which is the fifth installment in the series, released in 2002. A former marine Billy Coen and a S.T.A.R.S. (Special Tactics and Rescue Service) medical officer Rebecca Chambers come across a train filled with zombies near the Spencer Mansion. The two discover information about William Birkin and Albert Wesker, two of the most important villain characters in the series. Resident Evil 0 unveils some important revelations related to Umbrella Corporation and the origins of T-Virus as well.

Resident Evil

Coming to PlayStation in 1996, the first Resident Evil introduces players to S.T.A.R.S. agents Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield. There have been murders in the woodlands just outside Raccoon City. A series of events lead Jill and Chris to the Spencer Mansion in which they encounter undead victims of the T-Virus. Like the prequel title, the game gives more profound insight into Umbrella Corporation and its experimentation with biological weapons. Resident Evil has been remade and remastered in HD to improve gameplay. The newer version also expands the story.

Resident Evil 2

Two new protagonists, Claire Redfield and Leon Kennedy, appear for the first time in Resident Evil 2. Claire is looking for his brother Chris, whereas Leon is a rookie officer with the Raccoon City police. Each has a separate yet connected story. A powerful enemy known only as Mr X and the ever-mysterious spy Ada Wong make their debut appearances here, too. The series’ second entry uncovers more details about William Birkin along with his work on the G-Virus, which is an even more deadly biological weapon than the T-Virus.

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis

In a rather strange but exciting way, the story of Resident Evil 3 is divided into two parts; one which happens before the events of the previous game and another that occurs after. Ideally, you should play the first half of Nemesis, switch to Resident Evil 2, and continue with the second half. If that sounds like a cumbersome approach, thankfully you can just play RE 2 and RE 3 in that exact order without ruining the narrative. In the series’ third installment, Jill Valentine runs for her life while escaping/killing zombies before the U.S. government launches a nuclear strike on Raccoon City.

Resident Evil – Code: Veronica

Just a few months after the destruction of Raccoon City, Claire continues searching for Chris. Her adventure leads to an Umbrella facility in France and another further away in Antarctica. Chris is at the same time also looking for his sister. They finally are reunited and come face to face with Albert Wesker. Chris’ encounter with Wesker helps establish a direct connection between Code: Veronica and the 1996’s original.

Resident Evil 4

Following Leon’s unlikely escape from the nuclear missile strike to Raccoon City, he joins the US Strategic Command before moving to an anti-bioterrorism organization called the Division of Security Operations. He is now in a rural village in Spain on a mission to investigate the disappearance of the President’s daughter Ashely Graham and bring her home. Characters from previous games also appear in Resident Evil 4, including Albert Wesker and Ada Wong.

Resident Evil Revelations

Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine are no longer members of S.T.A.R.S. They are now agents of the BSAA (Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance). It is another zombie outbreak, but this time the case happens in the Mediterranean and is caused by a new bioweapon variant called the T-Abyss. Most of the actions take place on the cruise liner Queen Zenobia, which turns out to be a secret research facility developing the virus.

Resident Evil 5

Unlike the previous entries, Resident Evil 5 allows multiplayer campaigns in cooperative mode: one player controls BSAA agent Chris Redfield and another brings her new partner Sheva Alomar to life. They are on a mission in West Africa to stop black-market activities using bioweapons as a commodity. Arriving at Kijuju, they learn that the locals have been infected with mind-controlling parasites far more aggressive than those depicted in RE 4. Besides carrying out the mission as a BSAA, Chris is still determined to find the whereabouts of his former partner Jill Valentine.

Resident Evil Revelations 2

Claire takes center stage again after her time in Code: Veronica. For the first time, Barry Burton, a former S.T.A.R.S. and currently a BSAA agent, is a playable character. Revelations 2 is divided into four episodes – each episode is split into two parts, moving back and forth between the past and the present. The flashback sequence follows the exploits of Claire and Moira, whereas the present day chronicles Barry’s journey to find them.

Resident Evil 6

If you think Resident Evil 5 is a bit convoluted with Wesker’s evil plot, Chris’ side mission to find Jill, the new character Alomar, and the underwhelming co-op mode, it is nothing compared to Resident Evil 6. Four+ campaigns are stitched together to build a narrative about the struggle to stop an incarnation of the sinister Umbrella Corporation and yet another variant of a weaponized virus. Each campaign features its own hero including Chris Redfield, Leon Kennedy, Ada Wong, and Wesker’s son Jake Muller.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

Almost a complete reinvention of the series, Capcom does away with most of the familiar faces from the previous entries—except for the bits where Chris Redfield comes to the rescue. Events in Resident Evil 7 happen mostly in rural Louisiana at the Baker family residence. The main protagonist, Ethan Winters, stumbles upon the house when looking for his missing wife Mia. Little does he know the Bakers are just as undead as the zombies.

Resident Evil Village

A direct sequel to the previous entry, Village continues to explore Ethan’s story after successfully rescuing his wife. They now have a little daughter, Rosemary. A cult leader named Miranda is plotting to use Rosemary as a vessel for another girl. Ethan now has to wander around an isolated village full of Lycans, vampires, murderous dolls, and mutants to save his daughter. Chris Redfield plays a significant role in the mission’s success.

While there are many other Resident Evil games, the mainline story at the moment takes a pause with Resident Evil Village. Most critics and players alike say that Resident Evil 4, with Leon Kennedy at the forefront of the action, is arguably the series’ most beloved installment. We are inclined to agree, but both Biohazard and Village have taken Resident Evil back to their “survival horror” root and gloriously put the action sequences a little behind. Including the Revelations spinoffs, all titles listed above are canonical to deliver an excessive dose of engaging horror story and enough danger to keep you playing for years.

Have you played any Resident Evil games? Do you have a favorite? We’d love to hear from you.

Other things you might want to know

What if I want to play the games as Capcom wants me to do it, in order of release date?

Title

Original Release Date

Resident Evil

March 1996

Resident Evil 2

January 1998

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis

September 1999

Resident Evil: Code – Veronica

February 2000

Resident Evil Zero

November 2002

Resident Evil 4

January 2005

Resident Evil 5

March 2009

Resident Evil: Revelations

January 2012

Resident Evil 6

October 2012

Resident Evil: Revelations 2

February 2015

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

January 2017

Resident Evil Village

May 2021

If there are remakes of the originals, should I play them instead?

The general advice would be to play both versions. Playing the remakes give improved gameplay and graphics, but there might be minor changes to the plot progression although the narrative itself remains the same. Play the originals first and get your hands on the remakes if available. As of 2023, Capcom has released four remakes:

Remakes

Original Release Date

Resident Evil

March 2002

Resident Evil 2

January 2019

Resident Evil 3

April 2020

Resident Evil 4

March 2023

The remakes adhere to the originals in terms of storyline, but they also bring about new scenes and additional details to make everything feel fresh.

What is the best Resident Evil game?

Everybody has personal preferences, but the original Resident Evil 4 is almost universally accepted as the series’ greatest entry. The game represents a big leap in play style from cumbersome tank controls and locked camera angles to a third-person action survival horror adventure with a massive campaign. Even with the changes, Capcom can maintain an intense continuous dread by sending endless hordes of zombie monsters to Leon’s face throughout the gameplay. The combination of ammo scarcity, boss fights, cinematic set pieces, and a damsel-in-distress always in need of protection makes the game a memorable adventure even for seasoned players. In case you ever only play one title in the entire series, make sure it is Resident Evil 4. And then you have the remake, in which every little thing is better.

Events in “Resident Evil – Code: Veronica” take place about three months after the Raccoon City nuclear incident at the end of the previous release, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. Despite the odds, Claire Redfield remains determined to locate his brother Chris. In the opening scene of Code: Veronica, she is depicted as being inside an Umbrella Corporation facility in France. There are some shoot-out sequences and Hollywood-worthy stunts before Claire finds herself cornered by guards and taken to a remote prison island also owned by the Umbrella. A mysterious attack happens for everybody’s convenience, killing all the guards and giving her the chance to flee the island (or at least try to).

Escape is the only way to survive, but it is never a straightforward move. There are run-of-the-mill zombies, confusingly interconnected paths, easy puzzles, and a wicked assortment of powerful mutants along the way. Because Umbrella is involved, it is only natural to see some references about how the T-Virus transforms an infected person into an undead. In Resident Evil Code: Veronica – Chris Redfield, Claire Redfield, the story, and the enemies adhere to the tried-and-true Capcom’s renowned survival horror formula. Perhaps the game did very little to advance the gameplay mechanics, but for sure you could appreciate the sheer size (and length) of the campaign ahead.

Previous entries in the series are relatively brief affairs, requiring less than 10 hours to conclude. Whatever mysteries they hide are slowly revealed in small areas in well-paced gameplay. Code: Veronica is different; since the game requires the player to backtrack between a few separate locations, it usually takes around 15 hours to complete. Claire’s exploits start in prison, before moving to a palace, military facility, underwater area, a private residence, and finally another Umbrella base in the Antarctic. Much of the gameplay is spent backtracking.

It is in the palace that Claire first bumps into villain Alfred Ashford, supposedly a nobleman and for sure a mentally unstable Governor of Rockfort Island. He is obsessed with his sister Alexia and actually refers to her as Queen, while himself as a servant. Somewhere else, the sister has been subjected to a T-Virus experiment and preserved in cryostat. Alfred’s unhealthy obsession eventually leads him to become Alexia.

As far as the “escape” part is concerned, Code: Veronica does an excellent job at subverting Claire’s expectations. After some difficult boss fights which normally bring a relief that you beat the game, Alfred proudly declares that the struggle is not over yet. And then Part 2 begins. Starting from this point, the player takes control of Chris Redfield, who also is looking for Claire. He first makes a stop at the remote island only to discover Claire has been taken to the Antarctic, so he makes his way there as well.

A Curious Case

Code: Veronica marked the time when the RE series first made the switch from pre-rendered backgrounds to textured polygons. Such a transformation offered an exciting 3D look thanks to many objects that appeared in the foreground to deliver a genuine sense of depth to the surrounding environment. The camera angle was not as fixed as in previous Resident Evil installments, too. It swivelled about, zoomed in and out as you explored the area.

The 3D environment looked impressive and the horror action adventure was an experience of its own. The deep long story, supported by a cast of monsters and villains, brought more than enough twists and turns to keep you playing for hours on end. It was an improvement over the predecessors, but the praise didn’t last long.

Released in 2000 for Dreamcast, Code: Veronica might just be the most exciting Resident Evil game of the time. Because of the console’s limitations (both on performance and sales), PlayStation 2 and GameCube versions came to the surface in 2001 and 2003, respectively. More HD ports were made available for Xbox and PlayStation 3 in 2011. Despite the updated graphics, the pivoting camera angles and unwieldy tank controls had already been painful relics of the past when the HD versions saw the light of day.

While an agonizing control scheme was a major part of Resident Evil games during its early formative days, changes were needed if the series wanted to stay ahead of the increasingly competitive market. Players were (and consistently are) spoiled with new games every year; many of them might not be praiseworthy indeed, but some have managed to score massive success and critical acclaim.

Putting the original Code: Veronica against newer competitors is wrong. Critics and players enjoyed the dread, even if they had to deal with a clunky control scheme. Even by the standards of 2000, it was cumbersome. People said the control was a love-it-or-hate-it affair; you either loved the game so much that you were willing to cope with the weird interface or you simply didn’t.

And if you put the unfair comparison aside, Code: Veronica still seemed stuck between the nostalgic years of classic Resident Evil and the future of the series. The timeline is a curious case. It was released for a console about to be discontinued and between the other mainline RE titles. Code: Veronica expanded the overarching story of RE 2 (1998), but there had already been RE 3 (1999) for months before its release. To add to the strangeness of it all, the remake of the original Resident Evil came out in 2002.

It could be one reason Code: Veronica became an easily overlooked game, and even more so when 2005 arrived with Resident Evil 4, which carried such staples of survival horror as puzzle-laden mazes, mutants, zombies, locked doors, and inventory management, without the outdated fixed-camera and tank control.

We think that of all the games in the Resident Evil series’ mainline story, Code: Veronica appears to be grossly under-appreciated. Those who have played the game would argue it remains one of the series’ best, but there are just not enough believers to resurrect the glory. Even in Capcom’s own series of remakes, which includes mainline games from the original Resident Evil all the way to RE 4, Code: Veronica is found missing. There might be one in the future, but don’t bet on it yet. Still, there’s plenty to enjoy in Code: Veronica. Rockfort Island is a memorable location to explore, the boss fights offer a lot of fun, the cinematic flair is unique in its own way, and the classic tank controls work just like in previous RE games.

Have you played Resident Evil CODE: Veronica? Do you like the tank control? We’d love to hear from you.

Other things you might want to know

List of mainline Resident Evil games:

Resident Evil (1996)

Resident Evil 2 (1998)

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (1999)

Resident Evil: Code – Veronica (2000)

Resident Evil Zero (2002)

Resident Evil 4 (2005)

Resident Evil 5 (2009)

Resident Evil 6 (2012)

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (2017)

Resident Evil Village (2021)

Since Resident Evil: Revelations (2012) and Revelations 2 (2015) are perhaps too close to the core storyline to be considered spinoffs, you might as well add them to the list.

Why isn’t there a remake of Code: Veronica?

To be clear, there isn’t one at the moment. Rumors have it that Capcom only wants to do remakes on numbered titles, especially with the current series of remakes from RE2 to RE4. This is not the case, however. Capcom still refuses to commit to Code: Veronica Remake but the company still hasn’t ruled out the possibility either.

Is there any difference between the original Code: Veronica and the “X” or “X HD” version?

The core game remains unchanged because the ported version is basically a reissue rather than a remake.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is a 2016 action-horror film and the sixth instalment in the “Resident Evil” film series. Released in February 2017, it marked the end of the original series of Resident Evil films. Signs of concern were detailed in the 2-year delay of the movie, which was supposed to release in 2014 for Japanese viewers. Find out about Resident Evil The Final Chapter and the hazardous reception it received here!

Plot

The story picks up immediately after the events of “Resident Evil: Retribution.” Alice (played by Milla Jovovich), the protagonist and a former security officer of the Umbrella Corporation, finds herself alone in Washington D.C., where she learns from the Red Queen, an artificial intelligence program, that there is a way to save humanity from the T-virus outbreak.

Alice is informed that the Umbrella Corporation’s underground facility known as The Hive contains an airborne antivirus that can kill all the infected creatures and save the remaining survivors. However, there’s a catch—the antivirus must be released within forty-eight hours; otherwise, all the humans left on Earth will be eradicated.

Alice embarks on a mission to return to Raccoon City, where The Hive is located. Along the way, she encounters a group of survivors, including Claire Redfield (played by Ali Larter), who informs her about a rendezvous point where the last survivors are gathering. They join forces and make their way to The Hive, facing numerous dangers and obstacles, including hordes of undead creatures and mutated monsters.

Upon reaching The Hive, they discover that it is heavily fortified, guarded by deadly traps and defences. Dr Alexander Isaacs (played by Iain Glen), the head of the Umbrella Corporation, reveals himself to be alive and leading the defence of The Hive. Alice and her allies must fight their way through Isaacs’ forces and find a way to release the antivirus.

As the group progresses, Alice learns shocking revelations about her own past and her connection to the Umbrella Corporation. She discovers that she has been cloned multiple times, and her clones have been used as test subjects for the T-virus experiments. These revelations fuel her determination to put an end to the corporation’s tyranny.

In the climactic battle, Alice confronts Dr Isaacs, who has injected himself with the enhanced T-virus and turned into a powerful monster. With the help of her allies, Alice defeats Isaacs and manages to release the airborne antivirus, saving the remaining survivors and purging the world of the T-virus.

The film ends with Alice surviving the battle but being surrounded by Umbrella Corporation forces. However, she is joined by a fleet of survivors from across the globe who have been inspired by her actions. They vow to continue the fight against the corporation, setting the stage for a new beginning.

Reception

It’s evident that Resident Evil The Final Chapter fell short on the review cycle with many outlets reviewing a mediocre or lower preference. However, even though the film had a budget of around 40 million USD, the movie was able to gross 312.2 million USD at the box office.

Rotten Tomatoes

At Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a critic score of 37% and an audience score of 47%, an incredibly dire performance considering the revenue the film was able to obtain.

The Resident Evil Film Series directly adapts the video game franchise of the same name. Video Game movies have had a lot of slack for adapting poorly and so a franchise of films this large is pretty impressive. The film series includes 6 films plus one reboot film that came out as recently as 2021. Find out a little about all the Resident Evil Movies In Order here!

Although the Resident Evil 3 Remake still scores amazing reviews between critics and fans alike, some aspects still fell short. The remake had a lot to live up to following the Resident Evil 2 remake: a game which had outstanding receptions. Primarily, the basis of RE 3 downfalls was the cut content, something remakes should shy away from when the original content is great. Find out the pros and cons of the Resident Evil 3 Remake.

Game Summary

Resident Evil 3 Remake is a survival horror video game developed and published by Capcom. It is a reimagined version of the original Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, released in 1999. The game follows the story of Jill Valentine, a former S.T.A.R.S. member and protagonist of the Resident Evil series, as she tries to escape the zombie-infested Raccoon City.

The game is set in September 1998, concurrent with the events of Resident Evil 2. The T-virus outbreak has reached its peak in Raccoon City, turning its citizens into ravenous zombies. Jill, struggling to survive in the chaos, encounters the relentless Nemesis, a bioweapon designed to eliminate all remaining S.T.A.R.S. members.

As Jill fights to stay alive and uncover the truth behind Umbrella Corporation’s involvement in the outbreak, she joins forces with Carlos Oliveira, a U.B.C.S. mercenary. Together, they navigate the decaying city, confronting hordes of infected creatures and uncovering the dark secrets of Umbrella’s experiments.

Throughout the game, Jill and Carlos face numerous challenges and puzzles, as well as confrontations with mutated monsters. They also encounter other survivors, such as Dario Rosso and Tyrell Patrick, who provide them with valuable information and assistance.

As the story progresses, Jill learns about a possible evacuation plan and sets out to find a way to escape the doomed city. However, the relentless Nemesis continues to pursue her, leading to intense and harrowing encounters.

In the climax of the game, Jill discovers that Umbrella plans to use a powerful and highly intelligent bioweapon known as the “Nest 2 Tyrant” to eliminate any remaining evidence of their involvement. She must confront this formidable creature and stop Umbrella’s destructive plans before it’s too late.

Where The Game Shines

Visual Upgrade: Resident Evil 3 Remake boasts stunning graphics and realistic character models, taking full advantage of modern gaming technology. The environments are highly detailed, and the game features impressive lighting and visual effects, enhancing the overall immersion.

Streamlined Gameplay: The remake improves upon the original game’s controls and mechanics, making the gameplay more fluid and responsive. The character movement feels smoother and aiming and shooting are more intuitive, resulting in a more enjoyable and accessible experience.

Expanded Raccoon City: The remake expands upon the original game’s setting. It provides a more extensive and detailed exploration of Raccoon City. Players can navigate through various locations, encounter new areas, and experience the city’s destruction on a grander scale. Additionally, enhancing the sense of immersion and danger.

Enhanced Nemesis: The iconic antagonist, Nemesis, is even more terrifying and relentless in the remake. The AI has been improved, making Nemesis more adaptive and unpredictable in his pursuit of the player. This adds an extra layer of tension and excitement to the gameplay. And so, players must constantly strategize and find ways to escape his clutches.

Modernized Save System: The remake introduces an auto-save feature that reduces the reliance on traditional typewriter save points. This eliminates the need to backtrack to save progress, allowing for a more streamlined and convenient experience.

Where The Game Fails

Shortened Campaign: One of the main criticisms of Resident Evil 3 Remake is its relatively short campaign compared to the original game. Some players felt that the remake’s story and overall content were trimmed down, resulting in a less substantial experience.

Lack of Exploration: While the remake expands the city, some players felt that it lacked the exploration and interconnectedness of the original game. The linear nature of the remake’s level design limited the opportunities for in-depth exploration and backtracking.

Cut Content: The remake omits certain areas, puzzles, and enemy encounters from the original game, which disappointed some fans who were expecting a faithful recreation. This exclusion led to a sense of missed opportunities and a loss of some iconic moments from the original Resident Evil 3.

Absence of Multiple Endings: Unlike the original game, which featured multiple endings based on player choices, Resident Evil 3 Remake only offers a single ending. This reduction in narrative branches diminished the replay value and player agency found in the original.

Reduced Horror Atmosphere: Some players felt that the remake leaned more towards action-oriented gameplay, diminishing the horror atmosphere present in the original. The increased emphasis on fast-paced action sequences and the decreased emphasis on exploration and puzzle-solving detracted from the survival horror elements that defined the series.

Why was Resident Evil 3 Remake bad?

As stated before, the remake primarily fails with its cut content and shortened campaign. When the original content has good gameplay, a remake is expected to enhance those features, instead of cutting it.

Is Resident Evil 3 Remake better than 2?

Even though this is very subjective, the topic of remakes in the resident evil franchise centres around the Resident Evil 2 remake compared to number 3.

Even though it had its drawbacks, the game had sold over 7 million copies by March 2023

With a story centred around a family secluded in a house far into the wood, Resident Evil 7 Biohazard could be the best horror game Capcom has released. Biohazard continues the first-person perspective other games thrive off of, even if some fans may find this as a hindrance. However, with this critically acclaimed game mechanic, comes an excellent narrative focusing on the Baker Family and their dysfunctional lifestyle. Biohazard won 11 awards and has been nominated for a further 19 awards between 2016 and 2018. Evidently, a statistic that backs its overwhelmingly positive reception.

A Harrowing Turn Of Events

Resident Evil 7 Biohazard shares the same protagonist as Village, the systems engineer mutant Ethan Winters. Upon hearing an alert from his wife Mia, Ethan decides to meet her at an abandoned farmhouse. Mia had been missing for 3 years now and was presumed dead. When Ethan arrives, he discovers a locked-away Mia spouting about having to escape “Daddy”.

A woman named “Zoe” calls Ethan stating there is an escape route through the attic. Whilst escaping with Ethan, Mia attacks Ethan ferociously forcing Ethan to kill her. Seemingly straight afterwards, Ethan is knocked out by the head of the family: “Jack Baker”.

Ethan wakes up held hostage in the presence of the Baker family, consisting of Jack, Marguerite, Lucas and a handicapped Elderly woman. Ethan is forced to eat human remains and tortured by the family until they are distracted by the phone. This is the window through which Ethan was able to escape the dining room trying to find a way out (with some help from Zoe).

A deputy police officer comes to investigate the house however is eventually killed by Jack. Jack is killed by Ethan, however, this leads to Ethan finding out that the family have regenerative abilities. On the side of these powerful abilities, there are also monsters created by the Bakers who are made from other captives. Eventually, Ethan kills Jack again obtaining a key to escape.

Ethan finds out that Mia is still alive through Zoe due to Mia receiving the same powers the Bakers have. Zoe and Mia need to retrieve serums to cure the infections and so Ethan heads out to find them. This leads to him killing Marguerite but comes with the side effect of seeing visions of a young girl. On his way back, Ethan finds out that Lucas has now captured Mia and Zoe and must navigate through a maze of traps to get to them. Ethan is able to make two serums, however, Jack attacks and Ethan is forced to use one of the serums on Jack to finally kill him. Having only one serum left, Ethan is forced to cure only Mia or Zoe, not both.

Picking Zoe

Zoe and Ethan escape on a boat, leaving a devastated Mia behind. It is revealed that Mia had arrived at the family with a girl named Eveline, seemingly causing the infection to begin. They both are attacked by Eveline who kills Zoe and knocks out Ethan.

A vision of Jack displays, who is now sane and not infected, explaining to Ethan that Eveline brainwashed people into becoming insane.

It then switches to Mia’s perspective who has to traverse a wrecked ship in search of Ethan. Mia rescues Ethan and gives him a vial of Eveline’s DNA. Mia fails to resist the control of Eveline and attacks Ethan through her feeling of betrayal. Ethan is forced to kill Mia.

Picking Mia

Mia and Ethan escape on a boat, leaving a reluctant Zoe behind. A vision of Jack displays, who is now sane and not infected, explaining to Ethan that Eveline brainwashed people into becoming insane.

Suddenly, it switches to Mia’s perspective who has to traverse a wrecked ship in search of Ethan. She receives a vision of Eveline claiming Mia is her mother. Eveline makes Mia watch a tape to restore her memory revealing that Mia had developed Eveline as a bioweapon. Whilst Mia was supposed to escort Eveline to Central America, Eveline was able to escape containment and infect Mia.

Mia rescues Ethan and gives him a vial of Eveline’s DNA. Ethan is sealed out of the ship leaving Mia inside being controlled by Eveline.

The two different choices now merge together after the wrecked ship incident. Ethan heads to a hidden laboratory finding out that Eveline is a bioweapon called “E-Series”. Eveline can infect people to allow her to brainwash and mind-control them. Subsequently, it is revealed that Lucas is working for the organization that created Eveline and has been given something to stop the mind control effectiveness.

Ethan is able to create a toxin capable of Killing Eveline. Upon fighting Eveline, Ehtan is able to inject Eveline with the toxin which reveals that Eveline was the elderly lady all along. Instead of killing Evline, the toxin instead makes her mutate further which can only be destroyed by military-grade weapons.

After killing Eveline, Ethan is rescued by “Blue Umbrella” led by Chirs Redfield. If the player chose Zoe then Mia’s personal effects are thrown out in grief by Ethan. If the player chose Mia, then Mia is also rescued.

The Dysfunctional Family

As stated before, Biohazard centres on the baker family. Unlike other Resident Evil games, which have a mix of oddball enemies, Biohazard chooses to focus on a tight-knit family, creating a more detailed narrative.

Inspired directly from the unofficial fan favourite game from the franchise Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil Village takes the player through several areas each with their own lore and characters to delve into. With a change to a first-person shooter and a playable main character the majority of fans do not prefer characters from earlier games, and a divide in the review was present. However, with amazing game design and visuals to match, Village turned into a fun-filled ride of distinct character after character.

With 6 key areas and characters immersed in them, Ethan Winters (the main playable character) has to trudge his way to rescue his daughter. Attacked by BSAA captain Chris Redfield, different stories collide and some characters aren’t all that they seem to be.
