Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is a 2016 action-horror film and the sixth instalment in the “Resident Evil” film series. Released in February 2017, it marked the end of the original series of Resident Evil films. Find out about Resident Evil The Final Chapter and the hazardous reception it received here!
Plot
The story picks up immediately after the events of “Resident Evil: Retribution.” Alice (played by Milla Jovovich), the protagonist and a former security officer of the Umbrella Corporation, finds herself alone in Washington D.C., where she learns from the Red Queen, an artificial intelligence program, that there is a way to save humanity from the T-virus outbreak.
Alice is informed that the Umbrella Corporation’s underground facility known as The Hive contains an airborne antivirus that can kill all the infected creatures and save the remaining survivors. However, there’s a catch—the antivirus must be released within forty-eight hours; otherwise, all the humans left on Earth will be eradicated.
Alice embarks on a mission to return to Raccoon City, where The Hive is located. Along the way, she encounters a group of survivors, including Claire Redfield (played by Ali Larter), who informs her about a rendezvous point where the last survivors are gathering. They join forces and make their way to The Hive, facing numerous dangers and obstacles, including hordes of undead creatures and mutated monsters.
Upon reaching The Hive, they discover that it is heavily fortified, guarded by deadly traps and defences. Dr Alexander Isaacs (played by Iain Glen), the head of the Umbrella Corporation, reveals himself to be alive and leading the defence of The Hive. Alice and her allies must fight their way through Isaacs’ forces and find a way to release the antivirus.
As the group progresses, Alice learns shocking revelations about her own past and her connection to the Umbrella Corporation. She discovers that she has been cloned multiple times, and her clones have been used as test subjects for the T-virus experiments. These revelations fuel her determination to put an end to the corporation’s tyranny.
In the climactic battle, Alice confronts Dr Isaacs, who has injected himself with the enhanced T-virus and turned into a powerful monster. With the help of her allies, Alice defeats Isaacs and manages to release the airborne antivirus, saving the remaining survivors and purging the world of the T-virus.
The film ends with Alice surviving the battle but being surrounded by Umbrella Corporation forces. However, she is joined by a fleet of survivors from across the globe who have been inspired by her actions. They vow to continue the fight against the corporation, setting the stage for a new beginning.
Reception
It’s evident that Resident Evil The Final Chapter fell short on the review cycle with many outlets reviewing a mediocre or lower preference. However, even though the film had a budget of around 40 million USD, the movie was able to gross 312.2 million USD at the box office.
Rotten Tomatoes
At Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a critic score of 37% and an audience score of 47%, an incredibly dire performance considering the revenue the film was able to obtain.
If anything can be gleaned from a signifier like “The Final Chapter,” it’s that this almost certainly is not the last one; but it really should be.
Mike Massie – Gone With The Twins 2/10
Offers the strange spectacle of an action movie with a world-class action hero and unbearably bad action walking hand in hand.
Tim Brayton – Alternative Ending 2.5/5
You probably don’t need to have seen the previous five movies to follow this one; the story (by director Paul W.S. Anderson, who is also Mr. Jovovich) is as violently incomprehensible as the others, anyway.
Rob Gonsalves – Rob’s Movie Vault C+
IMDb
At IMDb, the film had an average score of 5.5/10 and a Metascore of 49.
I think the people involved with these movies were as eager to get this over with as the rest of us
