The apocalyptic sub-genre has a special place under the sci-fi umbrella. Most films in the category offer fascinating (if not farfetched) narrative about how the world will end, yet they also deliver somewhat positive conclusions, like a light at the end of the tunnel. In many of them, humanity is depicted as being on the edge of extinction, but then determination and perseverance punch back to whatever threat lies ahead. Throughout the last two decades or so, some of the best apocalyptic movies of the modern age are as follows.
