Fallout 4: The 4 Main Storylines to Take You Through its Post-Apocalyptic Setting

The story of Fallout 4 begins in the year 2077 in an alternate timeline where the world is engulfed in a devastating nuclear war. The player assumes the role of the Sole Survivor, who emerges from Vault 111, a cryogenic preservation facility located on the outskirts of Boston, Massachusetts. The Sole Survivor’s emergence occurs two hundred years after the nuclear devastation, and they discover that their spouse has been murdered and their infant son, Shaun, has been kidnapped.

As the Sole Survivor explores the wasteland of the Commonwealth, they embark on a journey to uncover the truth behind their family’s fate and to find their missing son. Along the way, they encounter various factions, mutated creatures, and other survivors, each with their own agendas and motivations. Here are the 4 main storylines of Fallout 4!

The Institute:

Fallout 4

  • The Institute represents a stark contrast to the desolate wasteland of the Commonwealth. Hidden beneath the surface, it is a highly advanced and technologically sophisticated organization, led by a secretive council of scientists known as the Directorate. The Institute’s primary goal is the advancement of humanity through scientific research and technological innovation. However, their methods are often controversial, including the creation of synthetic humans (synths) to serve their purposes.
  • As the player delves deeper into the Institute’s operations, they uncover the true extent of their influence and the moral implications of their actions. The Institute’s treatment of synths raises questions about the nature of identity, consciousness, and ethics. Players must grapple with the dilemma of whether the Institute’s advancements justify their questionable means, and they must ultimately decide whether to support or oppose the Institute’s agenda.

The Railroad:

  • The Railroad operates clandestinely to rescue synths from the clutches of the Institute and provide them with new lives and identities. Led by a former Institute scientist, Dr. Desdemona, the Railroad embodies the ideals of freedom, self-determination, and equality. They view synths not as mere machines but as sentient beings deserving of rights and autonomy.
  • Joining forces with the Railroad opens up new avenues for the player to explore the moral complexities of the conflict between humanity and synthetic life. Through their interactions with the Railroad, players learn about the personal stories and struggles of individual synths, challenging preconceived notions and prejudices. The player’s allegiance to the Railroad reflects their commitment to championing the rights of the oppressed and fighting against injustice.

The Brotherhood of Steel:

Fallout 4

  • The Brotherhood of Steel is a powerful military organization dedicated to preserving pre-war technology and maintaining order in the wasteland. Led by Elder Arthur Maxson, the Brotherhood arrives in the Commonwealth with the formidable airship Prydwen and establishes a significant presence. They view the Institute’s advanced technology and synthetic creations as dangerous threats to humanity and seek to eradicate them.
  • Aligning with the Brotherhood offers players access to advanced technology, formidable firepower, and the opportunity to confront the Institute head-on. However, the Brotherhood’s authoritarian tendencies and strict adherence to their own code of ethics may clash with the player’s values and beliefs. Players must weigh the benefits of joining forces with the Brotherhood against the potential consequences of their uncompromising approach.

The Minutemen:

Fallout 4

  • The Minutemen represent a grassroots movement dedicated to protecting the people of the Commonwealth and promoting peace and stability. Initially a fragmented and disorganized militia, the Minutemen are revitalized when the player assumes leadership and helps to rebuild their ranks. Under the player’s guidance, the Minutemen become a formidable force capable of providing aid and protection to settlements throughout the region.
  • Joining the Minutemen allows players to focus on the plight of the common people and the challenges they face in rebuilding society. The player’s leadership role within the Minutemen enables them to make a tangible difference in the lives of the people of the Commonwealth, forging alliances, resolving conflicts, and inspiring hope for a better future.
