Post-apocalyptic novels are great, but they’re not for everyone. Some people find long stories overwhelming and feel like they just don’t have the willingness to invest too much in complex plot lines full of complex details. Many young readers, especially high schoolers, are not too fond of thick end-of-the-world novels because their desks are already cluttered with high and mighty textbooks. What they need is a collection of concise narratives to quench the thirst for fictional narratives in the aftermath of a doomsday. Perhaps you’re just not that into reading, so getting it done as quickly as possible is the real aim here. No matter the reasoning, there are plenty of post-apocalyptic short stories to fit the bill. Before you hit the keyboard to Google a random title, look into the following titles first.

Night Surf by Stephen King (1969)

If you’ve never read The Stand before (or if you have), the Night Surf is the perfect companion to get a more complete picture of the story. While it’s not perfectly clear whether the events in the stories are related, you’re bound to discover that the narrative in Night Surf seems to happen at around the same time as The Stand. Here in the short story, a bunch of teenagers think they’re immune to a lethal virus known as A6 or Captain Trips, but of course the opposite is true.

The city of Allendale, California is now a barren wasteland thanks to a nuclear catastrophe. But since this is California we’re talking about, a smart home is left almost completely intact. The automated systems in the house still perform their scheduled routines like preparing breakfast, washing the dishes, wiping the floor clean, and addressing the now-absent homeowners like it’s just another day at the office. A nuclear disaster failed to disable the house, so nature sends a windstorm that blows a tree branch through its window and starts a fire. The only automated system that remains active is an AI clock that endlessly announces the time and date.

Things are getting out of control at home, and the environment is increasingly harmful to life. The entire members of an unnamed family plan to escape the planet with their neighbors on a spaceship. They have to look for another planet with a liveable atmosphere and a friendly moon that’s not too far away but not too close either. No one knows where this place is; the short story only mentions that it’s the third planet from the sun. If their destination is Earth, where are they now and why did they leave to begin with?

Earth has been abandoned many years ago. The “Founders” along with their new human civilization now thrive on another planet without having to worry about climate change, nuclear fallout, pandemic, and the like. The only thing that bothers them is how ugly their skin has become, probably because of adaptation to the new world. To deal with this skin issue, they send an agent back to Earth to collect a sample of the HeLa culture. Once the agent returns, the sample can develop good-looking skin for the wealthy. The Founders warn the agent that Earth is only a remnant of its glory days; the inhabitants are ugly and everything is reduced to ruins. When the agent makes a landing, the agent sees only evidence to the contrary. Earth is as beautiful as ever, and the people are even prettier and kind. Some of them even immediately offer the HeLa culture to the agent with no suspicion whatsoever. But the AI, which has been planted in the agent’s brain by the Founders to maintain control, refuses to believe it.

Los Angeles is in a post-apocalyptic time following a disease that killed most of its population. Pockets of survivors still exist in some places in the city, but they are either unable to read or mute. Rye lives alone; her husband and children died from the disease. She can’t read, which means she can speak, but then she comes to realize that it doesn’t do her any good at all. There’s no one to talk to, anyway. Throughout years of living alone in a city that’s almost entirely in a total breakdown, she has learned that revealing her ability to speak would only invite aggressive jealousy from the other survivors. She can speak, but she just doesn’t want to do it in front of anybody else.

Told from the perspective of a tribal youth in a primitive future society, this story explores the ruins of a once-great civilisation, revealed to be modern New York City. As the narrator uncovers fragments of the past, themes of knowledge, taboo, and human progress emerge in this prescient tale.

The Screwfly Solution by Raccoona Sheldon (1977)

An eerie and disturbing tale in which a biological phenomenon causes men to turn violent against women, leading to the collapse of civilisation. Blending apocalyptic horror with feminist commentary, it’s a chilling exploration of gender, control, and extinction.

A Boy and His Dog by Harlan Ellison (1969)

Set in a bleak, lawless future, this story follows a telepathic dog and his teenage companion as they scavenge for food and survival. Darkly humorous and morally complex, it critiques survivalist machismo while depicting a desolate, cruel world after nuclear war.

The Last Night of the World by Ray Bradbury (1951)

In this quiet, reflective story, people around the world dream that the world will end the next day, and accept it calmly. It’s less about chaos and more about the psychology of endings, focusing on how ordinary people might face the end with dignity.

In a bleak future where a superintelligent AI called AM has destroyed humanity and kept five survivors alive to torture for eternity, this psychological horror story explores themes of suffering, power, and hopelessness. It’s both disturbing and brilliant, with a chilling tone that has made it a staple of post-apocalyptic literature and speculative fiction.

Premiering in 2022, the From TV series marks in new Sci-fi horror show in which a small town is terrorized by nightly monsters. Although the theme is not a completely original idea, From has a diverse and detailed set of characters, each with their own backstories and reasons for the things they do. It’s extremely hard to make a series with enough uniqueness and creativity, the more we go on, however, From has spurred on enough audience attention to have a sequel series and more. Here is an episode-by-episode run-through of the From TV series, Season 1!

During a cross-country RV trip, the Matthews family – parents Jim and Tabitha, along with their children Julie and Ethan – come across a blocked road due to a fallen tree. Sheriff Boyd, a local, directs them to follow an alternative route through a small town. However, their journey takes a strange turn as they repeatedly find themselves returning to the town. Their situation worsens when another car forces them off the road, resulting in a crash. Worried about nightfall, the townspeople come to their aid, bringing passengers Tobey and Jade from the other car. Meanwhile, Sheriff Boyd and the town doctor, Kristi, stay with Jim to help Ethan, who has a severe leg injury.

In a frantic attempt to find shelter, Deputy Kenny’s car runs over a road spike strip meant for the RV. This prompts Kenny, Tabitha, Julie, the town priest Father Khatri, Jade, and Boyd’s estranged son, Ellis, to flee to the “Colony House” on foot before nightfall. Meanwhile, back in the overturned RV, strangers gradually surround the vehicle as darkness descends.

Upon reaching the Colony House, the group is granted entry by Donna just as the strangers encircle them. Following safety protocols, Tabitha, Julie, and the unconscious Jade are separated and secured. Inside the RV, Kristi, Boyd, and Jim work to stabilize Ethan, all while the strangers close in. Concurrently, Boyd and Donna explain the grim situation in the town: the nearby woods are inhabited by cunning, shape-shifting creatures who hunt for pleasure. The town’s residents are individuals who arrived and became trapped, with the oldest survivor being a peculiar man named Victor. Boyd discovered enigmatic talismans that, when placed inside enclosed spaces, offer protection from the monsters.

At the clinic, Sara, under the influence of mysterious voices, kills Tobey and opens the door, allowing the monsters to enter and gruesomely slaughter everyone, including Kenny’s elderly father. Morning breaks, and Boyd and Kristi transport Jim and Ethan to the town, while Kenny discovers the horrifying scene at the clinic and mourns. Inside the Colony House, Ethan spots a mysterious boy dressed in white through a window.

Following Jade’s recovery, Donna clarifies the situation to him. Struggling to believe it, Jade initially thinks the town is some kind of escape room arranged by the late Tobey. Father Khatri takes Jim and Tabitha on a town tour, outlining the local “Choosing Day” ritual. This ritual allows newcomers to decide whether they’ll reside in private homes within the town or in the communal Colony House. While passing a peculiar structure in town, Khatri mentions the “Box,” a unique form of punishment where the guilty person is exposed to the monsters overnight.

Frank, a man responsible for the deaths of his wife and daughter due to negligence, is the first to face this punishment. Boyd attempts to save Frank, but Frank declines the offer. During the Choosing Day event for Jade and the Matthews family, Julie selects the Colony House, while her family chooses Frank’s former home. Jade, causing a scene, is taken to Tobey’s grave. Kenny offers Jade shelter at his home, and Julie and the rest of the Matthews family settle into their new homes separately. Tragically, Frank meets his demise in the Box at the hands of the monsters.

In the distant past, a young Victor comes across the lifeless bodies of many town residents. A boy dressed in white appears and invites Victor to play on a roundabout. In the present, Ethan connects the boy in white he saw to a drawing made by Victor. Kenny reveals to Jade that the town doesn’t have a fixed physical location. While they talk, a radio suddenly emits static, and Jade takes it away. Back at the Colony House, Julie starts to regret her decision as she learns that the residents share everything and live collectively. She confronts Tabitha angrily about Jim and Tabitha’s impending divorce, triggered by the loss of their baby, Thomas. Tabitha returns home, and a heated argument ensues with Jim.

Victor takes Ethan on a quest to find the boy in white. In the woods, Victor shows Ethan a tree with an opening, demonstrating that objects inside it are teleported to random physical locations by throwing a rock in. Meanwhile, Jim and Tabitha search for Ethan but are surrounded by wild dogs until Victor scares them off with a pistol. In the diner, a hallucination drives Sara to contemplate harming Ethan, leading to a seizure. Outside the Colony House, Victor begins to dig a set of graves.

At the clinic, Sara recovers from her earlier state. Boyd starts to suspect that the town may trigger physical reactions, citing Sara’s and Ethan’s seizures. He confides in Kristi about developing tremors in his left hand. Seeking a different perspective, Sara asks Kristi if she would do something morally questionable for the sake of the entire town’s return home, to which Kristi agrees, motivated by her abandoned fiancée. Separately, Jade and Jim begin to contemplate unsettling possibilities, wondering if they perished in the crash and are now in purgatory. Meanwhile, Sara locks Tabitha in a barn with the intention of murdering Ethan. Nathan intervenes and prevents her from carrying out her plan, having confessed his actions to Father Khatri. Tragically, in the struggle, Sara accidentally slashes Nathan’s throat with the blade she intended to use on Ethan, leading to his untimely death.

In a cellar, Khatri holds Sara captive and shares his belief that the modern Bible contains 73 books, theorizing that their current predicament is a test from God, forming a new, 74th book. To prove the existence of the voices to Khatri, they remind him of a buried bag from his arrival. Boyd discusses with Kenny his plan to venture into the woods with a talisman in search of civilization, but Kenny rejects it, fearing it’s a suicide mission. Boyd confesses that he’s dealing with an extremely rare early-onset Parkinson’s disease. Jade and Jim manage to repair the radio using scavenged car parts, but it only picks up static.

Jade experiences hallucinations of a Civil War-era soldier chasing him and notices a strange symbol in a tree. When Kenny’s mother Tian-Chen sees this, she shows him a discarded notebook with similar drawings. Upon returning home, Jim finds Tabitha digging a hole in the basement to trace the power lines. Meanwhile, at the Colony House, a resident named Kevin is revealed to be developing a unique relationship with one of the monsters.

Khatri confides in Boyd about Sara and the voices, suggesting that he and Sara join Boyd on his journey into the woods. Meanwhile, Jim proposes constructing a proper radio tower, utilizing nearly all of the town’s resources, while he and Tabitha begin a thorough excavation in the basement. Jade discovers a photograph in the discarded notebook, and Tian-Chen points out a young Victor in it. At the Colony House, the residents celebrate the first anniversary of Fatima’s arrival in town. During the party, Fatima kisses another resident, sparking jealousy in both Ellis and Julie.

Tragedy strikes when Kevin, one of the residents, opens a window to let his “friend” monster inside. The creature brutally kills him and leaves the window open for others. A horde of monsters swarms inside, causing widespread havoc and claiming the lives of many inhabitants. Some manage to escape in a van. Ellis and Fatima survive by barricading themselves in the Colony House foyer with a talisman, while Victor and Julie flee into the woods, following the boy in white. Victor instructs Julie to enter the “faraway” tree, transporting her to a root cellar. Meanwhile, the van arrives at the sheriff’s station, where Boyd and Khatri are letting the Colony House residents in. Tragically, a monster kills Khatri during this chaos.

Boyd, Abby, and Ellis arrive in town just before nightfall. Guided by Khatri to a hidden cellar with Donna and other residents, they learn about the town’s dire situation. Boyd takes charge, organizing resources and exploring the woods, where he inexplicably finds livestock. As he assumes more responsibility, Abby’s mental health deteriorates due to neglect. During a scavenging trip, Boyd gets lost in the woods overnight. In a cave surrounded by monsters, he discovers the protective talismans. Upon his return, he finds Abby indiscriminately firing on the townspeople, thinking she’s trapped in a nightmare. Boyd is forced to shoot and kill her to save Ellis. In the present, Boyd and Ellis reconcile over Abby’s death. Boyd and Sara venture into the woods, while Kenny becomes the new sheriff. Kenny, Donna, and Jim explain their plan to build a radio tower to the townspeople.

Boyd and Sara reach the cave, marking it as a reference point. Venturing deeper than any other townsfolk had gone, they discover a tree adorned with dangling small bottles, which prompts another seizure in Sara. Back in town, residents work on constructing the Colony House radio tower but face a power supply issue. Tian-Chen suggests utilizing electricity from the town’s houses, providing a solution. Upon Sara’s awakening, she and Boyd find themselves in a tent with bottles containing scraps of paper dating back to 1864. Sara recounts hearing a new, unfamiliar female voice warning Boyd against his plan and revealing there are worse dangers in the forest than the monsters. Sara addresses Boyd by a nickname previously used by Abby, just before an unseen force attacks their tent. After the assault subsides, the tent is illuminated from the outside, and they hear a loud horn.

The townsfolk gather wiring to power the radio tower. Ellis proposes to Fatima, and she accepts. Kenny makes a pass at Kristi, who declines as she’s already engaged. Boyd and Sara exit the tent and find themselves in a forest engulfed in spiderwebs. Boyd is bitten by spiders when he approaches what he believes is Abby cocooned. Delirious from the bites, Sara encourages him to continue.

The radio tower is activated as a storm approaches. Jim contacts someone on the radio, but the voice threatens him by name and warns against Tabitha’s digging. Rushing home, the basement hole collapses, and Tabitha falls into a cave where she encounters Victor. Victor cautions her about the monsters below.

Boyd and Sara spot a lighthouse as the source of the light and horn. The boy in white instructs Sara to enter a nearby “faraway” tree. She pushes Boyd inside, and he becomes trapped in a shaft. Meanwhile, a bus arrives in town at the diner.

Even if you are not familiar with the books yet, you have probably bumped into The Expanse in its form as a TV series whether on SyFy or Amazon Prime Video. Thanks to the involvement of the original writers, the screen adaptation does an excellent job of honoring the source material. Both the show and the books follow the same plotline progression through the journey of the light frigate Rocinante along with the misadventures of its ragtag crew through the political turmoil of the galaxy. The Expanse book series is written by James A. Corey, the pseudonym of two American writers Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham. The first in the series is Leviathan Wakes (2011) and the story goes on until it concludes with the ninth, Leviathan Falls (2021). Here is a complete list of the Expanse Book Series:

In the far-flung future, humans have colonized much of the Milky Way Galaxy. Civilizations are divided into three major groups: Earth, Mars, and the Asteroid Belt. People from the former two groups (Inners) are the powerhouses, whereas the latter (Belters) is the marginalized blue-collar society to revolt against the oppression. Unlike the Inners who still retain the “normal” posture, Belters have evolved into an almost entirely different species characterized by a thin elongated body. Prolonged (lifetime) exposure to low gravity causes a drastic alteration in body proportion. In fact, Belters are so well-adapted to the new environment to where they can no longer return to the inner planets.

Humans on Earth and Mars rule by their respective military organizations, the United Nations Navy (UNN) and the Martian Congressional Republic Navy (MCRN). To stand for the Belters is The Outer Planets Alliance (OPA), currently regarded by the powerhouses as a terrorist group. Adding to the class conflict is a powerful strange substance of unknown origin that everybody is trying to weaponise. In later parts of the series, the substance has a mind and plans of its own. The sudden presence of interstellar portals, which open the doors to many new worlds, complicate the conflicts and upscale The Expanse’s epic universe even further Throughout many challenging situations, the crew of the Rocinante often have to carry the burden of turning conflicts into peace and maintaining the galaxy’s fragile balance of power.

Believable Sci-fi

The Expanse is neither a fantasy nor a humdrum science fiction. While not exactly hard sci-fi, it tells a plausible story of the galactic future and uses the foundation of modern science to make up the details. It uses actual locations such as Jupiter’s Europa and Ganymede, Saturn’s Phoebe, Uranus’ Titania, and several minor planets in the Asteroid Belt. There are also settlements on Earth’s Moon and Mars to establish the story. Spaceships are all around, but The Expanse makes it clear that faster-than-light travel is still beyond human mastery.

Each book tells a story about humanity dealing with a large-scale challenge and all the problems that come with it. The plot moves forward from the viewpoints of the characters—both main and secondary—whose exploits inevitably affect each other and major events in the galaxy. The Expanse book series screams sci-fi adventure with an exciting assortment of war, politics, terrorism, poverty, the unknown, the military, discoveries, and the ever-present threat of annihilation. All books are pretty much self-contained, but they are linked to each other with interwoven plot points connected to a single narrative arc.

People Also Ask: The Expanse Book Series Edition

Before we finish up, let’s go through some of the most common questions people are asking about The Expanse Book Series and the epic universe it upholds:

Who are the main characters throughout the series?

There are more than a few dozen characters over the course of 9 books. All major characters have their own dedicated narrative viewpoints. The crew of the Rocinante including James Holden (Captain), Naomi Nagata (Executive Officer), Amos Burton (Mechanic), and Alex Kamal (Pilot) have the highest combined page count. Only Captain Holden stands consistently at the forefront of the action from Book 1 to 9, whereas most of the crew get deeply involved in the galactic affair in Book 5.

Is there any upcoming book from the same author?

In a press release back in 2018, Ty Franck said there would be a new series taking on high sci-fi concepts as observed in books like Hyperion and Dune. Daniel Abraham added it would be yet another space-opera spectacle set in the distant future. Words are scarce about their next project together. Rumors have it that the upcoming book or series would be titled The Captive’s War.

Where to watch The Expanse TV series?

The entire 6 seasons of The Expanse are available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Final Thoughts

We think “The Expanse” is like a space opera grounded in hard-sci-fi. It doesn’t lean heavily toward any of them, but it has a little of both scattered across the stories. Since each book tells a specific story as part of the larger narrative, every title feels different and is like a flood of traceable breadcrumbs. The result is an accessible read, enjoyable for a newcomer as an introduction to the genre and an easily rewarding experience for seasoned fans.

Fancy more strange stories, curious critters, and sci-fi oddities?

First published 75 years ago, Dying Earth tells the story of the sun undergoing a rapid decline. Planet Earth is suffering the consequences. Only a fraction of the human population remains, and they don’t enjoy living under a dying sun very much at all. As expected, the journey is full of challenges from pirates, savages, diseases, and beasts of all sorts. The novel promises a rather dark premise but is sprinkled with a healthy dose of clever imagination and humor.

In 2017, American author Martha Wells published “All Systems Red,” the first installment of the widely popular and still ongoing Murderbot series. The novella became a New York Times bestseller and earned Wells both Hugo and Nebula awards for Best Novella in 2018. Here’s a guide to reading the Murderbot Diaries in the correct order.

Murderbot, the titular character of the series, is a bot-human construct whose structure comprises mechanical components and organic tissue. Formerly a part of Security Units owned by a corporation simply known as the Company, it comes equipped with advanced surveillance, data mining, and combat abilities in addition to energy weapons built into its body. It has an armored body and bones made of metal and synthetic materials, along with enhanced physical traits to strengthen it faster than augmented humans. It doesn’t need to eat and can survive in just about every imaginable condition. By default, Murderbot is essentially a Terminator.

Except, Murderbot is anything but default. It hacked its own module and practically freed itself from the Company’s original programming. Dr. Mensah, the leader of the Preservation Alliance, bought Murderbot and allowed it to stay in a freehold space station. Thanks to the deliberate self-hacking, Murderbot has developed even more sophisticated skills in infiltrating other computer systems, including security footage. It dislikes humans, except for Dr. Mensah, and enjoys much of its free time watching soap operas. And despite the general attitude towards people, Murderbot doesn’t always want to kill humans.

The Murderbot Diaries contains one full-length novel, two short stories, and five novellas. The series has not yet concluded, so you can expect to see more of it published in the foreseeable future. Not every release was published in order of plot progression. Chronologically, the Murderbot Diaries order is:

There is not much happening in the short story, except when some workers in a mine, where Murderbot is assigned as a Security Unit, are involved in an accident; one of them is almost killed. Murderbot, during a rescue attempt, describes how the HubSystem (some sort of automated command center connected to every unit’s module) is ignorant of workers’ safety. The system tells Murderbot to stay in position. Not only can Murderbot overwrite the order and rescue the worker anyway, but it also generates false data suggesting that the rescue order comes from HubSystem itself. Compulsory makes it clear that Murderbot doesn’t really care about humans. It has thought about killing them, but it prefers to enjoy watching soap operas first.

Murderbot is tasked with providing security and protection for a group of scientists, including Dr. Mensah. The supposedly simple job turns into a murder investigation when some other scientists from another group are found dead. Murderbot does everything in its power to do its job well and in the process becomes the only thing that shields every survivor from the threat. Dr. Mensa ends up buying its contract from the Company and practically makes it a free individual.

Now a free construct, Murderbot is on a mission to uncover a dark part of its past where it allegedly killed dozens of people in an old mining facility; a past that brought about the name “Murderbot.” It bumps into an artificial intelligence called ART. Since it is unlawful for a SecUnit to conduct an independent investigation, the only workaround is to disguise itself as a human. During the investigative effort, it comes across a bunch of humans trying to get a better deal from their employer. The original mission gets sidetracked.

The next adventure takes Murderbot to Milu, a station just outside the territory of Corporation Rim – the most powerful planetary system in the series. It is on an espionage mission to gather data on suspected illegal activities committed by GrayCris, the same organization that caused many troubles in All Systems Red. Once again, Murderbot disguises itself as a human during the mission. The plan is to use the collected information to speed up the investigation into GrayCris. In an inevitable crossfire, Murderbot has to protect a group of people caught in the middle of the battle.

Dr. Mensah is accused of corporate espionage by Gray Cris and is now reported missing. Murderbot has no time to waste. It will stop at nothing to protect its favorite human, perhaps the only human it likes, from harm. Off it goes to GrayCris’ headquarters where everything it has learned so far about being humans will be put to the test. All the technologies it has, including the advanced weaponry, are used in the final showdown as well.

The sixth chronological release of the Murderbot Diaries is unlike any other. Events in Home is told from the viewpoint of Dr. Mensah, who is still suffering psychological trauma from the kidnapping incident. Nothing particularly action-packed happens here. In some ways, Dr. Mensah feels much safer and better when Murderbot is around.

The actions happen at Preservation Station, the only place Murderbot can call home. Fugitive Telemetry sets Murderbot in yet another murder investigation although this time it has to team up with humans to solve the mystery. Although the book still highlights Murderbot’s combat abilities in the end, it gives a closer look at its intellectual strength through the journey.

The only full-length novel in the series, Network Effect is where Murderbot really starts to understand that a bit of human help during a mission doesn’t hurt that bad. There is a kidnapping this time, and Murderbot feels the urge to head the investigation because the victim is the daughter of a previous client. There is an indication that an old acquaintance might be involved in the crime.

We think Murderbot (the character) is a bit of a mix between the evil HAL from “2001: A Space Odyssey” and Data from “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” The former overwrites commands so they can kill humans, whereas the latter is fascinated with human idiosyncrasies. As for the series, some storylines and action sequences can feel repetitive although this does not necessarily a bad thing. The author keeps everything good intact so readers always want more and improve where there is room for improvement with each subsequent release.

Fancy more strange stories, curious critters, and sci-fi oddities?

Urban fantasy thrives on the juxtaposition of contrasting elements: the bustling urban landscape with its intricate and hectic city life versus the enchanting realm of the supernatural and magic. Urban fantasy sci-fi adds another layer, infusing the fantastical with the plausibility of science fiction.

Imagine a sprawling metropolis where suited executives meet with wizards in upscale offices guarded by elves, while in the alleyways, orcs and humanoid AIs plot an insurgency, feeling like second-class citizens beneath humans, elves, and dragons. This is the essence of urban fantasy sci-fi.

Unpacking the Allures of the Genre Mashup

This increasingly popular genre mashup, seen in books like Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files and Seanan McGuire’s InCryptid series, and films like Bright (2017) and Enola Holmes (2020) (and some interpretations of superhero films like Doctor Strange), takes the core of urban fantasy and amplifies it with hypothetical scientific advancements. It’s a “borderline” fantastical sci-fi set in an urban environment.

Balancing the Elements

There’s no prescribed ratio for blending these genres. Men in Black and Minority Report, for instance, can be classified as urban fantasy sci-fi due to the presence of necessary elements, though they lean heavily on sci-fi, with the fantastical elements subtly woven in. Conversely, Hellboy and Blade are primarily fantasy with just enough sci-fi to qualify as a mashup.

While a perfectly balanced blend might seem ideal, it’s not always the most compelling. Consider Star Wars (ignoring the “urban” aspect for now). Its worldbuilding arguably achieves a balanced fantasy/sci-fi ratio, with the Force as a ubiquitous mystical power, diverse alien species as mythical creatures, and heroic journeys against evil. While immensely popular, Star Wars, categorized as space opera, doesn’t represent the pinnacle of all sci-fi/fantasy blends. It simply represents one successful form.

Beyond familiar examples, the most compelling aspect of urban fantasy sci-fi is the unpredictable interplay between technology and magic. Imagine hackers battling virtual demons using code from enchanted books, genetic manipulation unlocking magical abilities, AI powered by witchcraft, dragons created in labs, or extraterrestrials building magical cities on Earth.

Expanding Narrative Possibilities

Genre mashups unlock vast storytelling potential. Unlike pure sci-fi, which emphasizes plausibility, or pure fantasy, which explains everything through supernatural means, or even urban fantasy, where magic often lurks beneath the surface, a mashup allows these elements to coexist, clash, and intertwine in dynamic ways.

More Than Just a Mixture

While a genre mashup combines elements from different genres, it’s more than just a simple sum of its parts. It’s about creating connections. A person in high-tech armor fighting a wizard requires a compelling narrative link. Backstories and worldbuilding are crucial for shaping character interactions and motivations.

A successful mashup is genre-bending, breaking traditional boundaries in innovative ways. Urban fantasy sci-fi isn’t merely an assortment of genre elements; it’s a tapestry where each thread contributes to a multilayered story, enriching both worldbuilding and characterization.

The allure of urban fantasy sci-fi lies in the dynamic fusion of advanced technology and the wonder of magic. It captivates audiences with its unique exploration of speculative fiction, defying conventional genre boundaries. While urban fantasy alone might not appeal to sci-fi fans, and vice versa, a well-executed mashup has the potential to attract both.

Is urban fantasy sci-fi your favorite genre mashup? What movies, books, or TV series do you think reflect the combination perfectly? We’d love to hear from you.

Other Things You Might Want to Know

What is a genre mashup?

A genre mashup blends elements from two or more genres to create a unique combination. It’s a common practice in various art forms.

What are the most popular genre mashups?

Popularity varies depending on the target audience, but easily recognizable mashups include Sci-Fi Horror, Fantasy Romance, Sci-Fi Western, Action Comedy, Crime Drama, and Science Fantasy.

Are there some genres that simply can’t be mixed together?

While no genre combination is inherently impossible, some present greater challenges due to fundamental differences. Examples include Grimdark Fantasy and Children’s Literature, Erotic Romance and Religious Fiction, Hard Sci-Fi and Supernatural Horror, or Historical Romance and Extreme Gore.

Arthur C. Clarke famously stated that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. In the past, the concept of a wristwatch, let alone one with a digital screen powered by the sun, would have seemed like magic. When Clarke formulated his Three Laws in 1962, the first digital wristwatch was still eight years away.

Thus, it’s reasonable to assume that in the 1960s, a digital wristwatch might have been considered magical due to its advanced technology. Blinking numbers on a screen are commonplace today, but back then, it likely seemed like witchcraft.

The Rise of Sci-Fi and Fantasy

In previous decades, science fiction was primarily relegated to pulp magazines. However, its popularity has exploded, making it one of the biggest and most lucrative genres today. While fantasy arguably remains king, the gap between the two has narrowed significantly.

Sci-fi’s journey from pulp magazines to mainstream acceptance is a testament to our fascination with speculative storytelling. The genre’s inventions and futuristic gadgets, often rooted in real-world devices and amplified by imagination, have captivated audiences. From Star Trek-inspired communicators to interstellar travel, human-like robots, levitating cars, and space stations, sci-fi has pushed the boundaries of our imagination.

Fantasy has also evolved. From high fantasy epics featuring wizards and knights in imaginary kingdoms to urban fantasy where magic intertwines with modern society, the genre has diversified.

The Convergence of Urban Fantasy and Sci-Fi

Today, urban fantasy and modern sci-fi stand on relatively equal footing. This has led to a proliferation of genre mashups, combining elements of both. The “magic” Clarke observed in the 1960s might be considered sci-fi today, while fantasy has embraced the purely magical, supernatural, paranormal, mythical, and even extraterrestrial.

The Avengers: A Case Study in Genre Mashup

A prime example of this successful genre blend is Marvel’s The Avengers. While superhero movies might not be as dominant now as they once were, The Avengers played a pivotal role in popularizing the genre mashup. It seamlessly integrated sci-fi elements (Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Widow) with fantasy elements (Thor, Loki, a space portal, a powerful magical artifact), all set against the urban backdrop of New York City.

The Avengers earned over $1.5 billion worldwide, becoming the third highest-grossing film at the time of its release in 2012. Before this, large-scale crossovers like Alien vs. Predator (2004) were relatively rare. The Avengers‘ success inspired other studios and ushered in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), a sprawling franchise of over 30 films that has consistently intertwined urban fantasy and sci-fi.

While urban fantasy sci-fi as a standalone genre might not yet match the popularity of its parent genres, it has a dedicated and growing audience. The level of enthusiasm might vary depending on the franchise, but the overall passion for the genre is undeniable. The enduring impact of The Avengers and the continued development of the MCU demonstrate the excitement surrounding this genre mashup and its potential for the future.

If there’s another genre you can mix into urban fantasy sci-fi, what would it be? Can you name some superhero films that are strictly sci-fi? We’d love to hear from you.

Other Things You Might Want to Know

Outside the conventional superhero films, what films exemplify urban fantasy sci-fi genre mashup?

Some relatively recent examples include Bright (2017), Blade Runner 2049 (2017), Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017), Alita: Battle Angel (2019), and Onward (2020).

How many “Avengers” films are there so far?

There are four Avengers films in the MCU: The Avengers (2012), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019).

What about some examples of urban fantasy sci-fi in games?

Several popular games exemplify this genre, including:

Shadowrun Series

Deus Ex Series

Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VII Remake

The World Ends With You Series

Tokyo Xanadu Series

Every genre, including an urban fantasy sci-fi mashup, presents its own unique challenges in the writing process, along with inherent strengths and weaknesses. Blending urban fantasy and sci-fi isn’t simply about pitting good wizards and elves against lightsaber-wielding androids in a sprawling urban utopia. Even when your story embodies that very concept, creating an original, coherent, and believable narrative presents distinct challenges.

Crafting a Coherent Worldbuilding

The primary challenge lies in seamlessly integrating science fiction and fantasy. The nature of their coexistence—whether harmonious or conflicting—must be clearly defined. Are these systems separate, interdependent, or occasionally overlapping? Under what circumstances? Clear rules governing their scope and function within the story are crucial for dynamic interaction and avoiding inconsistencies.

To help readers understand the roles of magic and technology, dedicate sufficient space to explaining their origins. On the sci-fi side, readers generally accept futuristic devices and advancements as logical consequences of scientific breakthroughs, perhaps through new energy sources or improved solar harnessing. Clarifying the level of technological advancement compared to our present-day reality is also helpful.

Explaining magic requires more finesse. Attributing its existence to sudden, unexplained emergence feels contrived. A more compelling approach involves presenting magic as an application of scientific principles, like manipulating gravity, or perhaps as technology acquired from an extraterrestrial species. Regardless of the origin, strive for plausibility rather than resorting to ancient wizards bestowing magic upon humanity.

The urban setting itself offers diverse possibilities, from a cyberpunk metropolis to a reimagining of Bacon’s New Atlantis, from an Elysium-like space station to a unique version of Asgard. Asgard, in fact, arguably embodies urban fantasy sci-fi. The key is balancing magic and technology within the landscape, ensuring neither feels like an afterthought.

Minimize jargon. Excessive jargon obscures meaning and overwhelms readers, hindering their grasp of the narrative.

Creating Believable (and Relatable) Characters

Compelling characterization is essential for any genre. Observe how even the most powerful characters in high fantasy or superhero narratives, wielding magic and mythical weapons, share fundamental human characteristics. Therefore, your main character should be human or, at least, possess relatable human flaws.

Superpowers and magical abilities shouldn’t equate to an easy life. Struggles, grief, loss, and regret are as important as peace and companionship. A hero might be driven by the desire to save loved ones or the world, while a scientist might be obsessed with harnessing magical artifacts for technological advancement. Characters need personal motivations, goals, and the means to overcome obstacles.

Since characters navigate both fantasy and science, their interactions must be believable. If magical villains invade a technologically advanced city, there should be limitations to their power and countermeasures available to the humans. Conversely, if technologically adept characters enter a magical society, their initial awkwardness and eventual adaptation (or conflict) should unfold gradually, reflecting realistic decision-making and evolving relationships.

Worldbuilding and characterization are arguably the most significant challenges in genre mashups, especially those blending urban settings, fantasy, and science fiction. While not all sci-fi demands strict scientific plausibility, readers appreciate logical explanations for technologies, futuristic devices, urban environments, and societal structures. Similarly, avoid the simplistic explanation of magic existing “since forever.” If magic has always existed, why bother with technology? The inherent contradiction between fantasy and sci-fi is precisely what makes the genre mashup so compelling.

Do you think the challenges in worldbuilding and character development are also as prominent in other genres? What do you think is the easiest genre mashup to write? We’d love to hear from you.

Other Things You Might Want to Know

What are some examples of high fantasy in films?

The usual examples include The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001 – 2003), The Hobbit trilogy (2012 – 2014), The Chronicles of Narnia series (2005 – 2010), and the Harry Potter series (2001 – 2011). Other notable examples include:

Legend (1985)

The Dark Crystal (1982)

Willow (1988)

The NeverEnding Story (1984)

Dragonheart (1996)

Stardust (2007)

What are the main characteristics of high fantasy, anyway?

High fantasy typically includes:

Mythical creatures (elves, dragons, phoenixes, griffins, orcs, and various fantastical beings)

A simple good vs. evil plot (a straightforward battle between heroes and villains)

Epic adventures (where the stakes often involve world-ending catastrophes)

A prominent magical system (where magic wielders are often indispensable characters)

Detailed worldbuilding (including cultures, languages, and intricate histories)

Is cyberpunk a form of urban fantasy?

No. Cyberpunk is a subgenre of sci-fi, primarily focusing on the societal impact of advanced technology. Cyberpunk can exist independently without any magical elements.

Road 96 is a narrative-driven road trip adventure with procedural storytelling elements. Set in a dystopian country on the brink of revolution, players assume the role of multiple teenage runaways attempting to escape the authoritarian regime of Petria by reaching the border.

Each journey is different, shaped by your decisions, route, interactions, and the characters you meet along the way. The game blends exploration, choice-based dialogue, light puzzle-solving, and minigames into an emotional and politically charged odyssey.

It stands out for its experimental structure—combining procedural generation with handcrafted story moments—to explore themes of freedom, resistance, and identity through a shifting cast of characters.

Plot and Setting

Set in the fictional nation of Petria in the summer of 1996, the game revolves around a series of teenagers who are trying to flee an oppressive government. The country is ruled by the authoritarian President Tyrak, with civil unrest brewing as a pivotal election looms.

You don’t play one single character—instead, you experience a series of road trips as various teens, each with different stories, personalities, and fates. Some will make it. Some won’t. Your choices affect not only their outcomes but the political landscape of Petria itself.

The world is vibrant and stylized, ranging from desert highways and run-down motels to gas stations, forests, and city outskirts.

Gameplay Features

Procedural Storytelling

The journey is different with every playthrough—encounters, events, and routes are randomly assembled from dozens of curated scenes.

Each segment ties back to seven recurring characters with branching arcs, gradually revealing their backgrounds and roles in the national crisis.

Choices That Matter

Your decisions—big and small—affect the fate of characters, the political climate, and the nation’s future.

Cumulative actions across multiple playthroughs determine the final outcome of the election and the resistance movement.

Multiple Playable Teens

You don’t just follow one protagonist. When one teen’s story ends (successfully or not), you pick up with another, gradually influencing the broader narrative arc.

Exploration and Minigames

Engage in activities like hacking, hitchhiking, rhythm games, or arcade shooting.

Travel on foot, by bus, in stolen cars, or with sketchy strangers—each mode of travel carries risks and rewards.

Upgrade System

Skills like lockpicking, hacking, or sweet-talking unlock new dialogue options or routes, carrying over to future characters.

Themes

Freedom and Oppression

A central motif is the struggle for liberty in a tightly controlled society. Your characters are always on the edge of capture, violence, or betrayal.

Youth and Rebellion

The protagonists are all teenagers, navigating the dangers of adulthood and politics under pressure.

Political Agency and Consequence

The game explores how small actions can ripple through history—voting, protesting, and even conversation choices impact the course of a nation.

Human Connection

Beneath the politics is a deeply human story about empathy, kindness, risk, and survival.

Universe Sandbox is a physics-based space simulator that lets you manipulate the cosmos on a massive scale. Seamlessly combining scientifically grounded simulations with sandbox-style interactivity, the game allows you to create, destroy, or modify entire solar systems and galaxies using real astrophysical laws.

It’s not a traditional game with objectives or narratives—instead, Universe Sandbox is a tool for experimentation, exploration, and awe. You can watch planets collide, spin up black holes, simulate climate change on Earth, or just fling moons into the Sun to see what happens.

It’s often used by educators, astronomers, and science enthusiasts for its surprisingly accurate simulation of gravitational dynamics, planetary motion, and stellar evolution.

Core Simulation Features

Gravity and Orbital Mechanics

Real-time Newtonian physics simulates gravity and inertia across thousands of celestial bodies.

Watch how orbits shift over time, planets get captured or ejected, or moons form from debris.

Scale and Speed Control

Zoom from planetary surfaces to galactic scale instantly.

Pause, slow down, or accelerate time by factors of millions to observe fast or slow cosmic events.

Destruction and Creation

Smash planets together and witness thermodynamic effects like surface heating, vaporization, and crater formation.

Spawn stars, asteroids, or even rogue black holes with a click.

Climate and Atmosphere Simulation

Tweak Earth’s atmosphere to simulate global warming, nuclear winter, or terraforming.

See the effects of axial tilt, greenhouse gases, and orbital changes on planetary habitability.

Stellar Evolution

Stars age, expand, and die based on realistic life cycles—watch a massive blue giant collapse into a neutron star or go supernova.

White dwarfs, binary systems, and even hypothetical exotic stars can be modelled.

Interactive Tools

Use lasers to heat up planets, “terraform” surfaces, or adjust their rotational spin.

View orbits, velocities, masses, and other astrophysical data in real-time overlays.

Themes

Cosmic Scale and Perspective

It conveys a profound sense of scale—how small we are in the grand scheme, and how fragile planets can be.

Creation and Destruction

Offers a sandbox of ultimate power—users can simulate the birth of life or the annihilation of entire star systems.

Science and Education

Explains complex astronomical phenomena visually, making it ideal for classrooms and armchair astrophysicists.

Speculation and Hypothesis

Encourages scientific curiosity by letting users explore the consequences of hypothetical changes—what happens if Jupiter becomes a star? What if Earth had Saturn’s rings?

Visuals and Audio

While not graphically intense in a traditional sense, Universe Sandbox uses clean, data-rich visuals to illustrate orbits, heat maps, atmospheres, and stellar processes. Explosions and impacts are colourful, and planetary surfaces deform under stress.

The soundtrack and ambient sound design are minimalist but atmospheric, emphasising calm, awe, and contemplation over action.
