Droids…
A theatrical film of the same name, released in 2008, acted as the entry point for the The Droids series features R2-D2 and C-3PO as the main characters in their own adventures facing off threats from criminals, bounty hunters, the Empire, and gangsters among others. Events in the show are set in a period before A New Hope, making it like part of a prequel.
In the penultimate episode (later aired as the series finale) of Ewoks Battle for the Sunstar, the Empire planned to use Endor as the base for the second Death Star, establishing a link to the original trilogy.
One of the distinguishing aspects of Rebels is how the series paints a picture of an unbound fearless voyage across the galaxy in times when hope runs low and evil grows strong. Rebels brought the franchise a horde of young generation fans that other series can only dream of. It’s so popular that the Ghost makes an appearance in The Rise of Skywalker and Rogue One.
Inexperienced pilot Kazuda Xiono is in the Resistance along with Poe Dameron in a mission to infiltrate the First Order. The series might not be as popular as Rebels, but the cell-shading animation makes it unique among its peers. The combination of the old-school anime look and big-budget action scenes has proved bold enough to deserve a Saturn Award.
The franchise’s latest animated series will make a much-awaited return in late September 2022. The next season promises some revelations about a Wookie Jedi and the mystery of how Omega is connected to the Emperor’s cloning program. The elite squad Clone Force 99 continues their fight for survival in the ever-changing galaxy. Everything is wrapped in a slick animation style with deep exploration into each character’s inner angels and demons.
It’s no secret that many (if not most) Star Wars animated series tend to play it safe. An undisputed answer to such a complaint comes in the form of Visions, developed by seven Japanese studios. Lucasfilm has given them permission to put their creative touches to the franchise and expand the narrative with their unique perspectives. The result is an unbridled version of Star Wars filled with tales from every corner of the galaxy and lively action sequences like nothing else before or since.
Tales of the Jedi has been in the works since the filming of The Mandalorian and is expected to stream on Disney+ in late 2022. There are going to be at least six episodes; three of them revolve around Ahsoka Tano and the other three are mainly about Count Dooku. However, each episode features Jedi from the prequel trilogy period. Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi are likely featured as well.
Another upcoming series, set to premiere in the spring of 2023 on Disney+ and Disney Junior, is Young Jedi Adventures. The first animated series geared specifically towards preschoolers and early-grade kids tells the stories of Force-sensitive younglings in their apprenticeship to become full-fledged Jedi Knights. Events in the series are set during the High Republic Era.
Set shortly following Attack of the Clones in which the Jedi Order is struggling to keep up with both the Sith and the Separatists, Clone Wars (not to be confused with The Clone Wars) series tells the tales of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker in their fight against the enemies. The end of the series establishes a connection to Revenge of the Sith.
Returning for the third season, The Mandalorian continues the journey of Din Djarin after an unexpected twist involving Luke Skywalker at the end of Season 2. Djarin is now the rightful owner of the Darksaber, making him “The Mandalore – leader of the Mandalorian people.” Grogu, the baby Yoda, is now with Luke Skywalker and R2-D2.
For a series with the name “Boba Fett” in the title, it’s a bit underwhelming to see how the most exciting parts of the narrative say very little (if any) about the character. Fans expect the series to feature the legendary – perhaps near mythical – bounty hunter as the main focus, but it turns out he is often relegated to a supporting role. While The Book of Boba Fett might not match the other series in storytelling, it delivers praise-worthy performances and visuals.
Rumors had it that Ewan McGregor would reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in an upcoming film. The rumor was only partly true; McGregor does reprise the role, not in a film, but a miniseries currently streaming on Disney+. It tells the story of Obi-Wan Kenobi in a self-imposed exile on Planet Tatooine following the destruction of the Jedi Order in Revenge of the Sith.
Diego Luna, who portrays a rebel spy Cassian Andor in Rogue One, will reprise his role in a Disney+ upcoming series Andor. The main focus of the new series is on his exploits during the time period before the film (Rebellion’s early history). Andor has been described by Kathleen Kennedy, the current president of Lucasfilm, as the most ambitious new Star Wars series in 2022.
Set in the same era and actually a spin-off of The Mandalorian, an upcoming series titled Ahsoka is set to air the first episode sometime next year. Fans speculate the series is not intended to fill the gaps in her origin story, instead it aims to shed light on the hunt for Thrawn. Hayden Christensen will be back as Anakin Skywalker, although it remains unclear if he is there as a ghost or flashback.
Not much is known at the moment about Skeleton Crew, a new series starring Jude Law scheduled for 2023. Events in the series are set during the reconstruction era of the Jedi Order after the demise of the Empire, so around the same period as The Mandalorian. The story revolves around four kids lost in space in search for the way home.
It’s far too early to say anything about The Acolyte as the upcoming series is still in preproduction phase. That said, it’s almost a certainty that the events in the new show are set 100 years before The Phantom Menace – approaching the latest decades of a galactic golden age in a period known as High Republic Era.
Talks about Lando Calrissian getting his own series have been around for a few years. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy made the confirmation of the upcoming series during Disney Celebration Day back in 2020. In an interview with Total Film, she said the series is currently in development and that Disney is still in discussion with Donald Glover about to the possibility of him reprising the role.

And a Jedi Master is a higher rank than a knight. A knight constantly trained to improve and especially trained in unarmed defense in case they ever lost their lightsaber. Jedi Knights were guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy, and served in key military roles during the Clone Wars. After this war, the Sith Lord Darth issued Order 66, declaring every Jedi was now an enemy of the state. Clone troopers killed nearly all the Jedi, except for Luke Skywalker who was known as the last Jedi Knight.
