The Anime series “Attack On Titan” has been in the running for almost 13 years now. Therefore it’s not surprising to find out how long the Attack On Titan final season (season 4) has been the topic of discussion in the AOT fanbase. The Final Season shifts the narrative, whereas, in the first 3 Seasons, events seem to play out between titans and Paradis. However, with the start of season 4, the enemy becomes a faint line where both titans and humans become an issue.

The Plot Summarised
Season 4 sees the characters of Paradis, characters we have been following for years now, take on new foes, those who decided to attack all the way back in Season 1 Episode 1. Eren has become someone locked in his own fate, and his vengeance is only spurred by what’s necessary for the future of Eldians and Paradis.
We are introduced to the new country of Marley, where Eldians born in that country can train to become Warriors who take on the titan powers. Reiner, Bertholdt and Annie are examples of these Warriors, allowing their families to become honorary Marleyan citizens and escape Marleyan prejudice. With new warrior trainees, Gabi, Falco and a few others in the making, it’s evident how these young Eldians are trained and taught to despise the Eldians living in Paradis.
The Final Season charts the battle between Paradis and Marley and everything that comes in between, and so Eren makes the first move, destroying architecture and killing a large number of spectators in the Marley Festival early on in the Season. This fight was backed by the Eldian Restorationists, a group led by members such as Zeke Jaegar and Yelena. This is where the Season twists, as members of both sides entwine to better the lives of the subjects of Ymir and Paradis as a whole.
As we see the world Paradis has become, trust is hard to gain between Paradis and Eldian Restorationists, leading to a devious plan by Zeke to put his spinal fluid in high-grade wine, the wine that high authority in the Paradis government drink. Zeke’s spinal fluid allows him to turn anyone who drinks it into titans, a powerful and discerning attack to pull
With a counterattack from the Marley forces, led by Reiner, Eren is forced to fight in titan form. With the eventual help of Zeke, Eren trudges his way over to Zeke, so finally they can release the founding titan’s power. A power which needs royal blood to use, therefore the need of Zeke. Events occur that halt this process and so Zekes releases the spinal fluid and it’s shown to take out many high members of Paradis including people like Command Pixis.
Eventually, we are shown the Path, channels which connect all subjects of Ymir. This is where is revealed that Eren was the puppet master who controlled many events that happened prior. For example, the time when Eren’s dad took out the royal family to retrieve the founding titan’s power. Eren betrays Zeke’s plan to euthanize the Eldians and takes the founding power for himself. At the end of Part 2 Eren changes into his founding titan form and causes the rumbling to ensue.
With the rumbling in play, the Paradis crew and warriors have now come together to take down Eren. The idea is to take a flying boat from the Jaegarists and fly to Eren’s titan. Jagersits such as Floch try to impend their mission, however, with sacrifices from people like Hange, the flying boat sets off to take down Eren’s titan. The final moments of Part 3 see the main group fly over Eren and start to descend. Eren is able to materialise other titans such as Zeke’s titan which attacks the crew, however, Reiner charges at him and de-attaches Zeke from Eren’s titan. The crew safely land on Eren’s titan and in the final moments Armin says the final words to Eren saying: “Once we drag you out of there, In what way are you free?”, a tense omen for what’s to come.
The last part is yet to come out, however, with how the prior events have occurred, Attack On Titan is set for another tense and heartbreaking finale.

The Troubling Production Cycle
As stated before, the production of all seasons of Attack On Titan has stretched nearly 13 years. This is an incredible amount of time considering how many episodes AOT actually has. Take One Piece, an Anime with over 1000 episodes has been running for 20 years, a more realistic amount of episodes for the time given to it. As of now, Attack On Titan has had a total of 88 episodes, a considerable difference from the likes of One Piece. However, where other larger animes might use fillers and recap episodes, Attack On Titan is full of quality episodes with no shortcuts.
The final season first aired on December 7th 2020, 7 years since the first season. Evidently, most of the fan base saw this release as the definite final season. However, for the keen eyes of manga readers, the promised episodes would never be able to cover the manga content without having to seriously cut major events. Part 1 last aired on March 29th 2021 with a total of 16 episodes.
The second part did not air until around 10 months later on January 10th 2022. Many fans had finished college or university by the time the second part came out to paint a picture of the long release cycle. Ordinarily, if this was advertised as separate seasons, the length wouldn’t be anything to write about, but with the global hope for one final season, these splits were troubling.
With Part 3 coming out on March 4th 2023, 11 months since part 2, it was announced that it would be split into two halves, with the final part being sometime in fall 2023. That marks 3 years from the start of part 1 to the eventual end of part 4 (if it releases when intended), for a season which was originally advertised as one final season.
Thankfully, the quality of the final season has made up for it. Take part 3, the animation and narrative make up for the loss of time waiting for the same final season.
How about you? Do you think the wait is justified? How have you enjoyed the final season so far? Let us know, we’d love to hear from you!
