In a distant future where parents are encouraged to genetically engineer their children, every new generation is expected to form an ideal society. There is no severe punishment for fathers and mothers who keep their kids perfectly natural, but those born the usual way are bound to work menial jobs. Vincent is a natural-born individual, whereas his brother Anton is an engineered one. Vincent is better than his brother in nearly every way into their teens, except he also has a 99% chance of having heart failure by the time he’s forty.

What the android has been telling the girl may be nothing but lies after all. Outside the confines of the facility, there are still remnants of humanity – survivors of a genocide masterminded by androids.

Awake

A solar flare causes a temporary blackout, but a permanent inability to sleep in humans. There are only three people in the world immune to the condition: Matilda, Noah, and an older woman who has been taken into a secret lab for research. When the old woman dies, Matilda and Noah become primary targets for research and are perhaps the sole hopes of restoring humanity from the insanity triggered by sleep deprivation.

Only one girl is allowed to come out each day, pretending to be the same girl every time. And then one day, Monday doesn’t return home.

The Book of Eli

A nuclear holocaust has turned much of the United States into a wasteland. Eli sets out on a journey to deliver a book to a group of people inhabiting the Alcatraz Island. It is not an easy journey, especially after he comes across Carnegie, who is also on the hunt for the same book Eli carries. Mesmerizing action sequences and a backdrop of endless desert blend into a satisfying dystopian visual treatment.

World War Z

Brad Pitt is Gerry Lane, a former UN investigator brought back to discover the origin of a zombie outbreak and to search for a possible defense against the attack. With hard work and a tiny bit of luck, Lane comes to realize that the madness-inducing virus only infects the healthy. People have to be sick to stand a chance against the brutal onslaught of the undead.

C. H. U. D.

An abbreviation for Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers, the 1984 film is all about what the title says. A photojournalist discovers that the underground population of New York City starts disappearing, leading to a seemingly farfetched theory about the presence of cannibals in the vicinity. When he figures out the theory is actually true, the photojournalist must step up and stop the horror.

The City of Lost Children

Krank is unable to dream, a condition that makes him suffer from premature aging. To slow down his growth rate, he devises a plan to steal dreams from children in a nearby city. Somebody has to quickly put Krank’s sinister dream-harvesting terror to an end, otherwise innocent kids will no longer have the joy of childhood. 

Light of My Life

A plague has rendered British Columbia devoid of women. The only female in existence is a teen girl named Rags. Her father, known only as Dad in the film, is determined to keep her safe by never staying in one spot for too long. Light of My Life is a package of father-daughter love in the struggle against difficult and unlikely circumstances.

The Blackout

An attack of extraterrestrial origin has made the world go dark. Everything powered by electricity no longer works. The only place unaffected by the strange phenomenon is a small region in Eastern Europe, comprised of northern Ukraine, western Russia, Belarus, and southern Finland. When the aliens actually come to invade, they concentrate the assault on this area. 

Akira

Another slick mixture of sci-fi and dystopian genres, Akira is a cyberpunk anime set in a much-changed future version of Tokyo. In a city where public unrest and gang warfare are commonplace, the government runs a secret experiment to develop telekinesis power in humans. Shotaro, leader of a biker gang, and his friend Tetsuo find themselves involved in the project in the worst way. 

Possessor

Future technology allows certain individuals to transfer their mind and soul into another person’s body. Tasya takes full advantage of the technology for her work as a contract killer. Over time she gets overly accustomed to living pretentiously as someone else. She gradually has difficulties returning fully as herself and must find a solution. 

Mother/Android

Not to be mistaken with the previously mentioned I Am Mother, this 2021 dystopian film sets events during a future full-blown battle between humans and robots. The Fifth Element

Night Surf by Stephen King (1969)

If you’ve never read The Stand before (or if you have), the Night Surf is the perfect companion to get a more complete picture of the story. While it’s not perfectly clear whether the events in the stories are related, you’re bound to discover that the narrative in Night Surf seems to happen at around the same time as The Stand. Here in the short story, a bunch of teenagers think they’re immune to a lethal virus known as A6 or Captain Trips, but of course the opposite is true.

There Will Come Soft Rains by Ray Bradbury (1950)

The city of Allendale, California is now a barren wasteland thanks to a nuclear catastrophe. But since this is California we’re talking about, a smart home is left almost completely intact. The automated systems in the house still perform their scheduled routines like preparing breakfast, washing the dishes, wiping the floor clean, and addressing the now-absent homeowners like it’s just another day at the office. When the agent makes a landing, the agent sees only evidence to the contrary. Earth is as beautiful as ever, and the people are even prettier and kind. Some of them even immediately offer the HeLa culture to the agent with no suspicion whatsoever. But the AI, which has been planted in the agent’s brain by the Founders to maintain control, refuses to believe it.

Speech Sounds by Octavia E. Butler (1983)

Los Angeles is in a post-apocalyptic time following a disease that killed most of its population. Light of My Life (2019)

A pre-teen Rags and her dad take on a journey through an end-of-time British Columbia, a place devoid of women. In fact, no female humans exist anywhere on Earth because a lethal plague wiped out the world’s female population a decade ago. Rags is the sole exception. Being the only woman on the planet, Rags depends on her father to keep her safe from the men-only society filled with angry, lustful, and manipulative bandits. The only way to go is forward is to go to nowhere. 

Dredd (2012)

In a post-apocalyptic world where the United States has become a wasteland of dystopian society, justice still has to prevail somehow. Order must be maintained, the streets must remain safe, and laws must be enforced. In the ruin of an old world inhabited by 800 million people, armed cops have license to kill. A degraded society of the future has a new kind of an old problem: mind-altering drug known as SLO-MO. The jobs to take down its production and distribution along with the drug lord running the operation are best left to Dredd – the exemplary cop, judge, and executioner. 

Aftermath (2014) 

Nuclear disaster is often a premise of a post-apocalyptic movie. The characters then navigate through a destroyed world, fighting for resources against each other. Aftermath (2014) doesn’t stray too far from such a mainstream idea. That said, it doesn’t tell a story in the decades or centuries following an apocalypse, but in the immediate aftermath of it. A small group of people are forced to take refuge in a shabby shelter somewhere in rural Texas. They’re struggling not only against zombie-like invaders, but also radiation poisoning and toxic air. 

Scorched Earth (2018)

If you don’t care much about the plot and only focus on the fight scenes, Scorched Earth is a good 96-minute fun. In the film’s version of a post-apocalyptic world, the destruction of the planet started not so long ago mainly due to relentless industrialized mining and uncontrolled fossil fuel consumption. Climate change of global scale puts the Earth on the brink of total depletion, forcing everyone to revert back to the much simpler old-school barter system and the absence of internal combustion. Burning fossil fuel is against the law, which leads to a nasty battles between bounty hunters and criminals.

Night of the Living Dead HD (1968)

Most movies about zombies are post-apocalyptic in nature, otherwise normal human will not be outnumbered by the undead. This 1968 film remains a mainstay of the genre for its beauty in simplicity. To stay safe from the hordes of flesh-eating corpses, who have just been reanimated thanks to radiation from a space probe explosion, some ordinary Pennsylvanians barricade themselves in a farmhouse. Struggles ensue to the very end of the film. According to Rolling Stone magazine, Night of the Living Dead is the best zombie movie of all time.

The Blood of Heroes (1990)

A war in the 20^th century brought the world to its knees. Most technologies have been wiped out, and the planet is now inhabited only by small populations here and there. People scavenge for food when there are no crops to harvest and raise dogs as livestock animals. There are no laser guns, invading aliens, or smart zombies in the film. The plot revolves around the lives of six people who travell across the land to play juggers, a savage game of American football using a dog skull. The Blood of Heroes gives a different take on the post-apocalyptic theme, with a touch of Dark Ages.

Cherry 2000 (1988)

In Cherry 2000, a film released over three decades ago, post-apocalyptic future happens in 2017. A constant economic crisis has driven the United States into madness with only few civilized areas remaining. Most people have become overly bureaucratic and more importantly, hyper-sexualized. There are lawyers in brothels to help men and women handle the paperwork before they can engaged in sexual activities. To keep things simple, men take androids as wives instead. When a successful man loses an android wife following a short-circuit damage during a vigorous sex in a wet kitchen, he hires sexy tracker to find him another.

Turbo Kid (2015)

In an alternate 1997, the world has already fallen into a post-apocalyptic state. The society living in a godforsaken place known as “The Wasteland” is ruled by an evil overlord called Zeus. Nothing is off-limit for Zeus; there is no boundary as to what he will do to retain control. He even grinds people into liquid. An orphaned boy, whose parents were killed by Zeus, is on a quest to save the day. Just about everything about Turbo Kid is 1980s-retro with one-eyed villain, first love, BMX, and desert soundtrack. Some say, it is a cult classic in the waiting. 

Carriers (2009)

Here is another typical premise: a deadly virus infected and killed most of the world’s population. The few remaining survivors are on their way to a sanctuary. While the virus-induced massive scale deaths is always the background of the narration, Carriers gracefully shifts the focus on the interpersonal conflicts among the sanctuary seekers. Their body might be healthy, but they find it difficult to make sound judgment about everything on the journey. Their survival and happiness depend on whether they should stay together or leave each other.

The Colony (2013)

The world is covered in snow as if the planet has returned to Ice Age period. Survivors form colonies in various places, but they all live underground to stay away from the extreme cold temperature. Without access to healthcare facilities and farm lands, they must control diseases inside cramped bunkers and prepare for a journey to the surface for food. Some colonies have already resorted to cannibalism. There is hope when a radio broadcast delivers news of melting ice in an unknown location, but hope can be dangerous. 

The Midnight After (2014)

A group of people take a minibus in Hong Kong to travel from Mong Kok to Tai Po. As the minibus goes through a tunnel, the world changes in an instant. The streets are empty and all places around are eerily quiet. Soon the passengers realize that they might be the only people left alive in Hong Kong. Many of them suddenly melt, become ill, or spontaneously combust. Some suggest it is a paranormal experience, and others think the strange phenomena are caused by nuclear disaster elsewhere. The Midnight After is for sure touching on the post-apocalyptic theme, but it takes the issue with a completely different perspective: comedy. As with any comedy, you watch it not for the action, but for the laugh.

The Survivalist (2015)

In a world where most people see each other only as potential meals, no one is trustworthy. To stay away from all the killings, a man chose to live alone in a small cabin deep in the woods. When a mother and a daughter came across the cabin, his story gets complicated. The mother is willing to let him do as he pleases to her daughter in return for food and shelter. He agrees, and everything seems alright although inappropriate. However, the mother’s intention to kill him never really disappears. 

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

To exclude Mad Max: Fury Road from a list of post-apocalyptic movie would be blasphemy. There is Max, a lone wanderer haunted by his troubled past; and then is also Furiosa, a female warrior longing to revisit her own past back at home. Their world is a barren desert with little humanity left. Everyone fights for survival, and a villain leader speaks like a Viking lord. A twist of fate and a common enemy bring Max and Furiosa together in a thrilling parade of outrageous car chase sprinkled with flame throwers, chainsaw, heavy metal distortion, black mud, gasoline, and mother’s milk.

Bird Box (2018)

A classic end-of-the-world fare, Bird Box features all the expected post-apocalyptic elements. It has scenes of horrible deaths and a dramatic attempt at escaping seemingly inescapable perils. The few remaining survivors may find refuge in a sanctuary, but they have to go there blindfolded; otherwise, they won’t be able to control their suicidal thoughts.

Long Day’s Journey Into Night

During a cross-country RV trip, the Matthews family – parents Jim and Tabitha, along with their children Julie and Ethan – come across a blocked road due to a fallen tree. Sheriff Boyd, a local, directs them to follow an alternative route through a small town. However, their journey takes a strange turn as they repeatedly find themselves returning to the town. Their situation worsens when another car forces them off the road, resulting in a crash. Worried about nightfall, the townspeople come to their aid, bringing passengers Tobey and Jade from the other car. Meanwhile, Sheriff Boyd and the town doctor, Kristi, stay with Jim to help Ethan, who has a severe leg injury.

In a frantic attempt to find shelter, Deputy Kenny’s car runs over a road spike strip meant for the RV. This prompts Kenny, Tabitha, Julie, the town priest Father Khatri, Jade, and Boyd’s estranged son, Ellis, to flee to the “Colony House” on foot before nightfall. Meanwhile, back in the overturned RV, strangers gradually surround the vehicle as darkness descends.

In a cellar, Khatri holds Sara captive and shares his belief that the modern Bible contains 73 books, theorizing that their current predicament is a test from God, forming a new, 74th book. To prove the existence of the voices to Khatri, they remind him of a buried bag from his arrival. Boyd discusses with Kenny his plan to venture into the woods with a talisman in search of civilization, but Kenny rejects it, fearing it’s a suicide mission. Boyd confesses that he’s dealing with an extremely rare early-onset Parkinson’s disease. Jade and Jim manage to repair the radio using scavenged car parts, but it only picks up static.

Jade experiences hallucinations of a Civil War-era soldier chasing him and notices a strange symbol in a tree. When Kenny’s mother Tian-Chen sees this, she shows him a discarded notebook with similar drawings. Upon returning home, Jim finds Tabitha digging a hole in the basement to trace the power lines. Meanwhile, at the Colony House, a resident named Kevin is revealed to be developing a unique relationship with one of the monsters.

Khatri confides in Boyd about Sara and the voices, suggesting that he and Sara join Boyd on his journey into the woods. Premise

In the far-flung future, humans have colonized much of the Milky Way Galaxy. Civilizations are divided into three major groups: Earth, Mars, and the Asteroid Belt. People from the former two groups (Inners) are the powerhouses, whereas the latter (Belters) is the marginalized blue-collar society to revolt against the oppression. Unlike the Inners who still retain the “normal” posture, Belters have evolved into an almost entirely different species characterized by a thin elongated body. Prolonged (lifetime) exposure to low gravity causes a drastic alteration in body proportion. In fact, Belters are so well-adapted to the new environment to where they can no longer return to the inner planets.

Humans on Earth and Mars rule by their respective military organizations, the United Nations Navy (UNN) and the Martian Congressional Republic Navy (MCRN). To stand for the Belters is The Outer Planets Alliance (OPA), currently regarded by the powerhouses as a terrorist group. Adding to the class conflict is a powerful strange substance of unknown origin that everybody is trying to weaponise. In later parts of the series, the substance has a mind and plans of its own. The sudden presence of interstellar portals, which open the doors to many new worlds, complicate the conflicts and upscale The Expanse’s epic universe even further Throughout many challenging situations, the crew of the Rocinante often have to carry the burden of turning conflicts into peace and maintaining the galaxy’s fragile balance of power.

Believable Sci-fi

The Expanse is neither a fantasy nor a humdrum science fiction. While not exactly hard sci-fi, it tells a plausible story of the galactic future and uses the foundation of modern science to make up the details. It uses actual locations such as Jupiter’s Europa and Ganymede, Saturn’s Phoebe, Uranus’ Titania, and several minor planets in the Asteroid Belt. There are also settlements on Earth’s Moon and Mars to establish the story. Spaceships are all around, but The Expanse makes it clear that faster-than-light travel is still beyond human mastery.

Each book tells a story about humanity dealing with a large-scale challenge and all the problems that come with it. The plot moves forward from the viewpoints of the characters—both main and secondary—whose exploits inevitably affect each other and major events in the galaxy. Murderbot, the titular character of the series, is a bot-human construct whose structure comprises mechanical components and organic tissue. Formerly a part of Security Units owned by a corporation simply known as the Company, it comes equipped with advanced surveillance, data mining, and combat abilities in addition to energy weapons built into its body. It has an armored body and bones made of metal and synthetic materials, along with enhanced physical traits to strengthen it faster than augmented humans. It doesn’t need to eat and can survive in just about every imaginable condition. By default, Murderbot is essentially a Terminator.

Except, Murderbot is anything but default. It hacked its own module and practically freed itself from the Company’s original programming. Dr. Mensah, the leader of the Preservation Alliance, bought Murderbot and allowed it to stay in a freehold space station. Thanks to the deliberate self-hacking, Murderbot has developed even more sophisticated skills in infiltrating other computer systems, including security footage. It dislikes humans, except for Dr. Mensah, and enjoys much of its free time watching soap operas. And despite the general attitude towards people, Murderbot doesn’t always want to kill humans.
